Active Pool to close for painting

The Mount Hot Pools Active Pool will close from Wednesday to Friday this week while re-painting is undertaken.

The Active Pool will be closing at midday on August 15 and will re-open on Friday, 17th, or Saturday 18th depending on the weather.

Signs are in place and a notice will be put on TCAL's website this afternoon.

This information from this week's Tauranga City Council weekly bulletin for the week beginning Monday, August 13, published below.

Parks & Leisure

  • Mauao: Resurfacing work continues on the Waikorire track. The track will remain open as much as possible. Signage will be in place if the track needs to be closed.

City Waters

  • A major pollution incident occurred this week involving the illegal dumping of a significant quantity of waste oil into the Cherokee Place Stormwater pond. The volume of oil dumped is estimated to be between 40 litres and 100 litres. This may have come from a single barrel or several smaller containers. Council was notified of the issue by a local business on Monday 6th August. It is likely the oil was dumped sometime in the previous five days. The clean-up required removal of the raw waste oil product and contaminated water, deployment of sorbent booms to soak up residual oil and the removal and disposal of oil contaminated reeds and vegetation. While a clean-up has been undertaken it is impossible to remove all the oil from the water and vegetation. It is likely that a rainbow sheen will be visible on the pond surface for many months. The oil will certainly have had an environmental impact, and may have further harmful impact on aquatic and bird life for some time to come. The clean up cost is estimated to be $10,000-$12,000.
  • A minor sewer overflow was reported this morning affecting the Waikareao Estuary, believed to be a blockage on Waihi Road which overflowed into a stormwater sump. This stormwater system leads to an open drain off Sutherland Road which delivers stormwater to the estuary.
  • Water quality test results from last week's Third Avenue and Sterling Gate Drive sewer overflows are all clear.

Transportation

  • Construction Sites: Watch for construction vehicle movements around large commercial construction sites at:
  • Doncaster Road: Weather permitting, work to construct a new footpath link between Summerlands Crescent and The Gardens Drive is underway. This is expected to be completed mid August, weather permitting.
  • Waihi Road: Work to construct a new footpath link between Jonathan Street and Tamatea Arikinui Drive is underway. This is expected to be completed mid August, weather permitting.
  • Moffatt Road / SH2: Work to install new sewer mains in Moffat Road and on SH2 near the intersection with Moffat Road is continuing. The work is being done off the road and should not affect traffic but please take care when driving through the area.
  • Overhead Power lines: Maintenance work to replace overhead powerlines is continuing in Windermere Drive, Poike Road and Oropi Road. The work is weather dependent. Please watch for road works signs and drive carefully in these streets.
  • Ultrafast Broadband: Work to install Ultrafast Broadband is being done in the Fraser Street area and from 18th Ave to Kesteven Place and at the Mount in the residential areas of Maunganui Road to Marine Parade and Central Parade area. Most of the work is being done off the road.

TAURANGA AQUATICS A RUNAWAY TRAIN

Posted on 15-08-2012 21:22 | By EYESPY

From all angles, TCALs costly renovations and maintenance work meanders on its merry way at the Mount Hot Pools at a snail's pace. 10 long weeks have passed and the only progress made is some drab grey painting, titivating up the men's and women's changing rooms and forlorn attempts at re-commissioning the main spa pool, which looks like a swampy bombsite. What a financial farce! Tauranga citizens must take the time and trouble to go and have a look for themselves because even out of town visitors are gobsmacked at what they see. Suddenly, last week out of the blue at Mount Hot Pools appears this unsightly, ugly large wooden structure 15 metres long, housing pool covers for the passive pool to help retain heat. Mount Hot Pool temperatures have been successfully managed for the last 30 years so what has suddenly gone wrong with heat exchangers and pool equipment all at once following last year's $2.5 million upgrade? Heaven knows what Tauranga Aquatics are doing, what with new staff lunchroom and another large room near the reception area at Baywave POOLS. Also the 'cats out of the bag' that TCC have recently sanctioned $300,000 be spent for the purchase of replacement gym equipment that is less than 7 years old and described in the Baywave Club Gym brochures as modern gym equipment. Then there is of course the new superslide brainfade proposal. What gives with TCAL and when will this nonsense ever stop - loss on loss, flop on flop… sooner rather than later, those driving this disaster will hit the wall. Perhaps TCC Council or TCAL management would like to provide the public with an explanation what gives with this continuing saga.

It doesn't get any better the place is shambolic

@EYESPY... all of what you say is the plain truth but obviously you have not been to the POOLS in the past couple of days #place is a mess #pool temps are awful #the spa pool reinstatement has taken on a life of its own and defies all attempts to resurrect it # the pathetic painting efforts lack any sort of coordination # last but not least and I know you won't believe this -last week the carpark was patched up and all the new carparking spaces clearly marked out with permanent white painted lines.Well on Tuesday guess what(?) the whole Hotpools carpark was resealed with hotmix covering up the permanent white lines painted only a week ago. What an unbelievable shambles. DAH !!

You guys don't know the half of what goes on .The recent reception area partitioning at Baywave provided a new staff room very flash very expensive with nice cabinets a microwave table and chairs but guess what the kitchenette does not have a sink to wash any dishes. Now that is what you would call dopey and dozy .Plus what was looking like a general meeting room has become new offices for 2 of the 150 staff.Looked like there were already sufficient rabbit warrens so God only knows what this is all about.Questions do have to be asked about the whole Aquatics operations-there has to be a better way. !!!
