Where to honour the late Queen

It is interesting that Maori wish to create a memorial to Queen Elizabeth II in the Waitangi Treaty grounds – a place the Queen had not returned since the black T-shirt incident and where she was accused of not abiding by the Treaty. It is also worth remembering that the representatives of the Maori Party in NZ Parliament refused to abide by the Rules of Parliament by refusing to swear allegiance to the sovereign, thus also breaching the principle of the original Treaty. Suddenly they are interested.

In 1932 Lord Bledisloe, the Governor General of NZ, gave the Treaty House and Treaty land to the nation. He did so because of his dream – that the estate be held in a trust for all New Zealanders – a place for recreation, education, and cultural events, free from political influence, for all time. In 2007 entry was free to New Zealanders, Shane Jones saying this was their right to visit the nation's birthplace.

Since the National Government gave iwi control of the Treaty Trust in 2016 all adult tauiwi NZers are paying $30 just for entry and a controlled iwi culture based tour. It is $60 for overseas visitors.

To place the Queen in this environment one would be not only contributing to this (now) profit-making venture but also subjecting her to a rewrite of NZ history. I urge Parliament to honour Her Majesty in an environment freely available to all peoples of New Zealand.

RE Stephens, Papamoa.
