"Wanted: the next generation of professionals ready to push boundaries, challenge the status quo and do something extraordinary with their career," says Western Bay of Plenty District Council's Head of People and Capability Darren Crowe.

The council is offering eight paid internships in their 2022/23 Summer Student Programme.

"We're looking for students that want to do something extraordinary in their careers and make a difference. For our people. For our communities. For each other," says Darren.

The programme offers an exciting opportunity for students to learn just how important Council's mahi is in the community, and gain invaluable experience for their CV.

The 2022/23 internship intake has roles in a range of areas in Council, from engineering, building services and summer ambassador roles.

Darren says that the summer students are an important part of the Western Bay whānau.

'This programme is designed to help build up passionate and skilled professionals who will shape the local government sector, and our communities, in the future. Whether you love engineering, horticulture, design, technology, writing, working with animals or people – we have a career pathway to get you started.

'We're on a journey to become a District with strong and sustainable community partnerships, that embraces the diversity of the area and is bold in its vision for change. The next generation will play a huge role in creating new solutions that make our communities lives better – and you can start now.”

Darren says in return the council offers the summer students "a supportive learning environment and great mentorship opportunities from our experienced team", as well as the chance to work in a dynamic and fast-paced work environment.

"Whether our teams are out in the community or working in the office – no two days are the same," says Darren.

Darren encourages rangatahi studying relevant qualifications to put themselves out there and apply for the positions.

'On-the-job experience is the best way to learn, and an internship with us gives you an insight into what Council does, a taste of the career opportunities in local government and potential career paths you could follow.

'And often internships lead to permanent positions here at Council, so it's definitely worth giving it a go!”
