Interest in new Greerton project

Plans are underway for a new development in Greerton after two developers expressed interest in a public/private partnership redevelopment of the Greerton Library and adjacent sites.

Tauranga City Council reports it is working with two developers on a development to take place on the current Subway site on the corner of Chadwick and Greerton Road and adjacent block of toilets, and the Plunket rooms on Greerton Road.

Two developers have expressed interest in the planned private/public partnership in new building projects – one on the site at the intersection of Chadwick Road and Greerton Road.

Councillor Terry Molloy is on the working party looking at advancing the public/private partnership development proposal, and says all he can confirm is they are dealing with two local developers.

'But that's all I can stay at the moment. It's still blue sky thinking, we have to wait and just see what comes out of it.”

One of the possibilities being considered is the complete redevelopment of the entire block, including the long awaited library rebuild, says Terry.

'I have got to emphasise that it is only one of the possibilities, it's still a long way from delivering anything and that's a starting point.”

The council's other public/private development at Mount Maunganui's downtown Pheonix parking precinct has also stirred developer interest, says Terry.

'But that's still early days also.”

That usually means debt and bills all over the place, end result ratepayers are unwillingly and unknowningly dragged into the mire of debt and annual losses just like Baypark, Mount Hot Pools, Route K and all the rest, they never learn ...

More appealing than a Library, they should be looking at closing it, consolidate all into one say at papamoa (perhaps even that is to big) and just allow free access via schools, internet cafes and so on for all.
