Busy week at the library

As part of this week's Money Week Tauranga Library will host a lunchtime seminar on ‘money and how to keep more of it'.

Anyone is welcome to attend the seminar at lunchtime on Wednesday, September 5 run by Tauranga Budget Advisory.

Tauranga Library will host two events this week.

The library is also hosting The Great Read on Thursday as part of Adult Literacy Day.

It is estimated more than 780 million adults lack the minimum literacy skills. In association with Altrusa Tauranga and Literacy and Language Bay of Plenty the library will host two hours of power reading on September 6.

From 12noon and 2pm people are invited to pop into the Tauranga City Libraries and read for 10 minutes.

All readers will go in the draw to win a $20 Books A Plenty voucher.

This information from this week's Tauranga City Council weekly bulletin for the week beginning Monday, September 3, published below.

Parks & Leisure

  • Contractors are beginning to build a new section of track at Yatton Park this week. This involves moving the existing route away from the edge of a steep bank at the back of the park which has been affected by coastal erosion and slips.

  • Works to install a new ceiling in the far northern room of the Elizabeth Street Community Centre are due to commence on 10 September. The works are a result of a health and safety project to replace the current paper ceiling which has been deemed a fire risk. Works are expected to take approximately one week.

City Waters

  • Beginning Monday 10 September 2012, for a period of two weeks, City Care will be flushing water mains in the area from Oropi Water Treatment Plant to Tauranga CBD. This is annual maintenance which will affect Greerton, Parkvale/Merivale, Gate Pa, and all the Avenues.

  • These flushing activities will create temporary flows of water down kerbs and channels and may cause some discolouration to some people's water supply. If people do notice discolouration, our advice is to run the outside taps for approximately five minutes. Discoloured water is not harmful and is not a cause for concern.

City Projects

  • A new watermain carrying bore water is being thrust from Tauranga Domain to Wharepai Domain.

  • The old bunker has been removed from Wharepai Domain and gates have been locked open to ease and encourage access.

Transportation

  • Construction Sites: Watch for construction vehicle movements around large commercial construction sites at:

  • Maunganui Road: Weather permitting, work to repair the road near Rata Street is due to be done this week. The work will be done at night to reduce disruption and is only expected to take one night to complete. Please take care when driving through this area.

  • Spring Street Parking Building: Now open until 11:30pm Monday - Saturday and after 7pm it is free to park.

  • Ultrafast Broadband: Work to install Ultrafast Broadband is being done in the Fraser Street area and from 18th Ave to Kesteven Place and at the Mount in the residential areas of Maunganui Road to Marine Parade and Central Parade area. Most of the work is being done off the road.

  • Police Station Site Willow Street
  • 24 Pacific Avenue
  • Horny Bull Site, The Strand
  • Cameron Road/Elizabeth Street construction and road improvements. Expect delays at signals due to island and footpath works.
  • 40 Selwyn Street at the corner of Elizabeth Street and Selwyn Street

780 million people?

So that is really saying that Libraries are a failure, so can you please remind me why we are spening $8 million a year on the running costs alone?
