Recent bad weather has left Salisbury Wharf with great damage and caused the Tauranga City Council to bring forward planned maintenance.
The steps on the west side of the wharf are now closed for urgent repairs. Once these steps reopen, the maintenance work moves to the south side of the wharf.
This information from the Tauranga City Council's weekly works bulletin for the week beginning August 10, 2009, shown below.
Water Supply:
* A programmed water shut down for Panorama Drive did not go ahead due to bad weather conditions and has now been reprogrammed for this Thursday 6th August.
* Affected residents will be advised by way of letter drop. More details are available on Council's website www.tauranga.govt.nz by typing key words 'water shutdowns'.
* Our online Rating Information Database now enables customers to obtain land rates and water rates invoices by e-mail. To set up this facility, you can sign up on our web site. Go to the TCC website, type ‘rates' in the search box and click on the Rating Information Database link.
* Watermain upgrades are continuing in the area adjacent to the Harbour Link Project. Work is ongoing in the Chapel Street, Mirrielees Road and Marsh Street area.
* Pillans Watermain Upgrade (TC47/08) - Work continues with pipe laying in Maxwells Road, pipe connections in Landscape Road, and under road thrusting in Chapel Street still to happen.
* Fire hydrant marking and servicing will continue in Otumoetai and throughout the city over the coming year.
* Ohauiti Road and Harrisfield Drive. Completion of pipe laying has been delayed until the end of August to work in with other works currently being done on Ohauiti Road.
* Council contactors City Care Ltd will be installing new water mains in Mansfield Street during August.
* Directional drilling has started for the water main upgrade in Lydbrook Terrace and works will be ongoing during August.
* Construction has commenced on a new reservoir to service the Ohauiti area. Works include construction of a new reservoir and installation of over 1.1 km of new water main. This project is expected to be completed by January 2010.
* The annual mains flushing programme will begin in mid August, taking approximately six weeks to complete. Notices will be placed in local newspapers and on Council's website to notify areas affected.
* Last Friday and Monday a contractor damaged a water main on Wharf Street, affecting water supply to businesses on Wharf Street from Cameron Road to Willow Street. Council will be following up with the contractor over the damage.
Drainage:
* One sewer problem to report this week: In Durham Street at the Wharf Street intersection, cable thrusting work damaged the sewer main pipeline. The pipe has now been repaired and the sewer mains have had to be high pressure jetted and vacuumed to clean the debris washed into the sewer system.
* The Pollution Prevention team were called to two incidents this week. One where concrete wash water was being hosed down the kerb. The person responsible was requested to sweep up the concrete residue. The second incident was where a resident in Whitsunday Key was cleaning a painted surface and washed this into the road kerb, then into a street sump. This required a small vacuum tanker to suck out the material from the sump and the kerb channel swept to avoid staining.
* Work continues on a number of stormwater soak holes in Cameron Road between Chadwick and SH29 and alongside the race course and Tauranga Golf course to improve the stormwater soakage system here.
* Stormwater connection work off Pengary Lane and Jason Place was completed.
* Awaiti Place open drain towards Joblin Drive was cleaned as there was a blocked culvert holding water back.
* Spraying of gorse around the Tukorako Drive stormwater pond was completed. Further work will be scheduled to tidy up this area.
* The Glenlyon open drain was clean of silts and vegetation to improve stormwater flows.
* Totara St waste water pump station upgrade: The new receiving manhole is complete & the wetwell is now finished.
Waiari Water Supply Project:
* A decision is expected from the hearing commissioner during August following a resource consent hearing for the construction and operation of a new water intake and treatment plant to serve the Papamoa urban growth.
Bulk Water Meter Installation:
* Downer EDI Works has installed eight of the ten new meters. Completion is expected in September 2009.
Inflow Reduction Project:

Parks and Leisure
* The Pepper tree outside Starbucks Coffee on the Mount Main Street will be removed tomorrow (Thursday 6 August) and the stump will be ground another day, probably within the week. The tree is being removed due to the damage to the tree pit it sits in and it will be replaced this year.
* Maintenance and upgrade work on the Mauao base track started on Friday 31 July. This stage of the work involves a new surface overlay and replacing culverts damaged in slips last year. The work is expected to take up to three weeks. Every effort will be made to keep the track open to the public during this work.
Transportation
* Elizabeth Street: Work to replace a retaining wall on the footpath by St Mary's Catholic Church has started. The work will take about 6 to 8 weeks to complete. At times the footpath by the wall will be closed to pedestrians. Pedestrians are asked to take care and use the signed alternative routes to negotiate the Elizabeth Street and Cameron Road intersection. There will be minor delays to motorists for the duration of the works.
Events Tauranga
* The Baycourt Fly Tower upgrade and Safety improvement Contract is currently being tendered.
* The recent season of '4 Flat Whites', which was a production toured by the Auckland Theatre Company, received rave reviews and had 5 full houses. This was an event which Events Tauranga assisted and encouraged to bring to Tauranga to fill a perceived void in the market. It has been indicated that on the back of the excellent result of this season, Auckland Theatre Company will be seriously considering touring to Tauranga on a regular (perhaps annual) basis.
