Outgoing Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern's comment that she no longer has enough in the tank is very appropriate to the way she and her cohorts have handled New Zealand's economy over the past five years. Notwithstanding some good things which Jacinda has done, and we will all have varying opinions about that, the Labour Government has wasted megabucks on trying to control everything – health, Three Waters, manipulating the Reserve Bank, being soft on crime and justice, and sidelining Tauranga with Commissioners. Yes we had Covid-19 and worldwide money printing, which was always going to end up with some inflation. So Jacinda sails off into the sunset and we taxpayers have to pick up the pieces.
New Zealand would have been far better off today with proper economic management and less hidden agendas. That way the money tank would still be more than half full.

It's all very well to criticise the Labour government for excessive spending in those sorts of generalised anecdotal terms. But let's consider some actual facts: In the five years to 2017, National budgeted a total of only $781 million for “health infrastructure”: mainly, the maintenance and replacement of hospitals. In both 2015 and 2016, the figure was zero. The result was a drastic decline in the standards of hospitals to the degree that many required massive work to stop them literally falling apart. To stop the neglect, in Labour’s five years from 2018, they allocated $5.8 billion to addressing this. So was that "proper economic management"?

.... I usually see little merit in thinking of past performance and would prefer to look to a more positive future....however, if the numbers you comment on are correct and National indeed budgeted just under $800 million to health, then where are the the magnificent improvements to health with the additional $5 BILLION the Labour government have allocated?...we know the answer of course and to assume by 'throwing cash' at a particular issue with gay abandon and no accountability is madness at it's finest....this is where we are IMO...

OK. Perhaps you could try reading my comment again: because of the neglect by National, Labour was forced to spend that money simply to stop hospitals falling apart. It's not hard to understand.
I could not believe.........

....that anyone could possibly or does believe the healthcare system in New Zealand has improved with the additional funding allocated by the current government. More bums on seats...tick....more bureaucracy....tick.....more elective surgery wait times.....tick....ongoing nurses pay resolved?....hah hah....$5 billion???....where'd it go eh?.....
one more time...

Do you just not read other comments and continue on with a blinkered monologue? One more time - it went on REPAIRING THE HOSPITALS.
Thank you.....

...for the interest...I wonder if there are examples apart from 'here say' of work to hospitals known of that amount to that of $5 BILLION dollars?...not forgetting, yet again of all of the other non action costs Mr Capamagion eludes to in his letter...the hospital service is certainly a concern, but just one of many....
