The first public acknowledgement of delays to Tauranga Indoor Sports and Exhibition Centre (TISEC) has come out of a Tauranga City Council meeting.
Tenders are unable to be called until an agreement is signed with the Baypark promoter allowing public access to the sports centre while events are being held at Baypark, the council projects and service committee heard yesterday, Tuesday, August 11.
Tauranga City Venues Ltd (TCVL) and Baypark Promotions Ltd signed a heads of agreement on the issue which was a condition of TECT granting $6 million plus $1-2 million in tax credits to start the project.
That was in June, when construction was expected to start this month. Now it is not expected to begin until after Christmas.
The access road has been drawn up and tenders for it are about to be called. The access agreement based on the heads of agreement has been sent to the promoter and his lawyer, but it has not been signed off as was agreed, says TCVL director Stuart Crosby.
'We are still waiting for a response to that,” says Stuart. 'We see no reason why it can't be signed as it is consistent with the heads of agreement. There is no reason why a decision can't be made.”
He says the full council will be brought up to date and advised of options so a decision can be made on a course of action.
