There’s nothing like a Hot Club Sandwich

Anyone who's read this column for a while knows I love Hot Club Sandwich. I have all their albums and have seen them several times in concert; each time I see them I am amazed by the great songs, the fun vibe, and the peerless musicianship. There. I told you I love these guys!

So I'm chuffed that they're coming to Tauranga at the end of the month, and playing a particularly special concert.

For those that have never heard of them, Hot Club are from Wellington, a trio fronted by the indefatigable Andrew London, who was recently in town playing as part of the Tales of Tennessee country show (he's a very busy bloke). On bass is Terry Crayford, himself a bit of a legend of the New Zealand music scene, being the father of ace jazz keyboard player Jonathan Crayford and the man who - obscure factoid time – wrote the theme for Fair Go.

The third current member is James Tait-Jamieson, who blows various instruments including fantastic saxophone. They all sing in rather cool harmony.

Together the Hot Club boys play a delightful mixture of swing, with a little blues, rockabilly, and jazz to spice it up. Best of all, many of their songs are witty explorations of middle class Kiwi life, from the trials of saving your marriage by buying appliances to coping with your daughter's new boyfriend. I'm a sucker for a witty lyric and their take on everyday life is hilarious.

The band together has achieved significant milestones: one of their albums got a four star review in America's Downbeat magazine, about the most respected jazz publication in the world. And they have a regular gig in Wellington at Old St Paul's cathedral.

It was because of that gig that they're here. Last November they invited local blues favourites Kokomo to Wellington where the bands played together at Old St Paul's. So Kokomo invited Hot Club to come and play together here in Tauranga. And that's what they are doing. On September 28 the two bands will be performing at Mills Reef Winery. Andrew says: 'We've known the Kokomo chaps for a long time and it's a pleasure to be getting together in their home – the two bands fit together so well, it will be a wonderful show!”

And, to sweeten the mix, The Self-Righteous Brothers will be opening the night by launching their new album (reviewed below). Tickets are already selling fast and are limited. Get yours from the winery (phone 07 576 8800).
