Walker told to take a hike

Environmental campaigner Jill Parry announced her candidacy for the mayoralty yesterday by being trespassed from the Tauranga City Council offices.
She was also protesting her exclusion from a meeting regarding the developmental future of the beachfront towards the Te Tumu cut.
The eastern end of Papamoa is targeted for development and will be the site of a 45,000 population satellite city in a few years time.

Jill Parry, founder of Sandy Walkers, being trespassed from the city council.

'They don't want me there because I know what's going on,” says Jill.
The meeting was setting development criteria for the new city without having regard to outstanding natural landscape features, says Jill.
'With no protection for outstanding features of the natural landscape, it means you can build high rises as high as you like,” says Jill.
Jill Parry and the Sandy Walkers campaign for retention of the natural beachfront features and want to preserve the dune skyline visible from the beaches.
The meeting was a technical briefing defining landscape values, says Mayor Stuart Crosby. There were Sandy Walkers witnesses present who qualified, but Jill Parry did not.
'We do have standards here, we can't have people in our customer services area causing a nuisance,” says Stuart.
Whether Jill would be permitted to address council as a member of the public during the two-year trespass period would depend on her behaviour, says Stuart.
'A lot will depend on her manner. She has at times caused problems in the council chambers before.”
Stuart's discussed the issues with Jill Parry before today, and walked the beaches with her.
'I understand where she's coming from, she just needs to focus on the issues and not the personalities.”
