The draft street naming policy that will encourage developers to consider locally significant names for new streets comes up for a vote on Tuesday, August 18.
The new policy was sparked from a discussion about out-of-culture names becoming predominant in some developments for marketing reasons, when there were better locally derived options.
The policy to be voted on at the Strategy and Policy Committee meeting encourages developers to consider the following in proposing street names:
Maintaining our identity, local history, significance for Tangata Whenua, milestones and people.

I am all FOR ENCOURAGING and educating (without threats of fines or other such bully tactics) sub-division owners to name their streets and property with appropriate names SO LONG AS this DRAFT respects the property rights of the owners of the property. UNFORTUNATELY the Tauranga Council have lately shown complete disrespect for peoples private property rights, and I am afraid they will stray from simply ECOURAGING, to WEILDING THE BIG STICK with threats and FORCE. It looks like they have got away with stealing one persons land against the rightful owners will, Whos property will they take next? Will it be YOURS?
