A talk on the proposed Gate Pā cultural centre this afternoon will provide those interested in the development of the national institute an opportunity to learn more about its significance to Tauranga.

Ngāi Tamarāwaho representative Buddy Mikaere from the Pukehinahina Charitable Trust will give an update on this nationally significant cultural centre at the monthly meeting of the Tauranga Historical Society at 2pm, Sunday March 5.

The centre, which is intended to tell the story of the New Zealand Wars in Tauranga Moana is planned to be built on the Gate Pā Recreation Reserve, the site of the 1864 Battle of Gate Pā | Pukehinahina.

The Tauranga community have shown overwhelming support for a cultural centre that will tell the story of the New Zealand land wars.

Public feedback in November 2022 to Tauranga City Council showed that commons themes from the written submissions included it being a 'very appropriate use of the land”, and that having a cultural centre or museum in Tauranga was 'long overdue” and that the site was a place of 'immense historic importance”.

In 2020, the council received a proposal from Pukehinahina Charitable Trust, in partnership with mana whenua Ngāi Tamarāwaho, to establish a cultural and historic centre on the Gate Pā Recreation Reserve.

Buddy says the national institute would be the only one of its kind in the country and that the centre would recognise the significance of the Battle of Gate Pā and other battles.

On April 29 1864 the Battle of Gate Pā was fought on a ridge known as Pukehinahina. The pā consisted of two redoubts with trenches and bunkers to trap the British. Māori were successful in their defence, with 35 British troops killed and 75 wounded, twice the estimated Māori casualties.
Buddy says the centre was 'very important” and would help raise Tauranga's profile.

Buddy Mikaere's talk on Te Pūtake o te Riri | New Zealand Wars Centre is hosted by the Tauranga Historical Society in the hall behind Brain Watkins House Museum, Cameron Road from 2pm -3.30pm. Koha appreciated.

We are already struggling with costs and council spending through the roof. This will be too costly and council keep cramming into restricted space and causing more gridlock. The Joyce road site is also in their sights to spend money on . They are hell-bent to spend our money least combine to the Joyce road site may keep some costs down

Can't afford it

Just like all the current project presented, we can't afford it going into the worst conditions for 10 years. Any feedback will not stop the 4, its just endless.

Gift

I'd like to gift the name: Battle of Gate Pa Cultural Museum. On the other hand why not Tauranga Museum and since the Commissioners wish to force one on us move it out to the Pyes Pa site and make it all encompassing and multi- cultural like Auckland Museum. After all, the history isn't about one culture. The reality however is we don't need and cannot afford museums dotted around here, there and everywhere. There's a MAJOR thing called priorities.
