Unsettled time continues for Kawerau residents

A 4.2M quake on Sunday morning near Whakatane is an indicator that there may still be some unsettled days ahead for locals.

The quake, which occurred at 10.42am was at a depth of 4km and 20km west of Whakatane.

Kawerau residents report they were woken at 1.01am and again at 3.43am by two quakes.

A 3.5M quake was recorded at 1.01am at a depth of 5km, 30 km southwest of Whakatane. At 3.43am, a 3.4M quake was recorded at a depth of 3km, 20 km southwest of Whakatane.

On Saturday evening, Geonet reported that they have located 365 earthquakes in Saturday's Kawerau swarm.

Seven of Saturday's quakes were reported to have over a magnitude of 4.

"We know it has been an unsettling day for those feeling these earthquakes," says a Geonet spokesperson.

"Although we cannot say how long this swarm will last, the likeliest scenario is for activity to decrease over the next few days. Remember to drop, cover and hold in an earthquake and follow advice from"

All big quakes happen in early morning. New moon gravitational pull at max 22nd march 6.23 am in Tga. So allow 1 day either side just in case. Run outside don't get stuck under a table if it happens.
