More Tauranga councillors

The Tauranga constituency on the Bay of Plenty Regional Council is to increase from four to five in the next election due to population growth.

Councillors recommended the changes be made to the region's representation this week, following a statutory review of the arrangements.

The additional Tauranga councillor takes the total number of regional councillors from 13 to 14.

In addition to the extra councillor for Tauranga, the regional council also decided to shift the boundaries of the Kōhi and Mauāo electorates. The move sees the Matatā area included in the Kōhi electorate, and removed from the Mauāo electorate.

The decisions are subject to a one month appeal period, during which any person or organisation that submitted on the review may appeal the decision to the Local Government Commission.

The local body elections are in 2013.

Instead of increasing the number of councillors, try spending less time in meetings and more actually doing something.

How dare they vote an increase in councillors when there is not enough "work" for those at the trough already?
