Proposed marine precinct stalls

Plans to redevelop Tauranga's marine precinct have stalled after two business consortiums refused to cover the cost of a geotechnical report on the Mirrielees Road site in Sulphur Point.

Tauranga City Council property manager Anthony Averill says despite strong interest in the site from two groups – neither wanted to pay for a survey underneath the 5ha site to determine whether it sustain a marine travel lift.

Anthony is now preparing a report looking at the council's options for the proposed marine precinct, which he will present in two months' time.

'I'm expecting there is a certain amount that we'll have to do to minimise risk for developers.”

He says one option is for council to undertake the geotechnical survey, but he was uncertain what that would cost.

Council wants to see the site, which stretches from the Harbour Bridge to Cross Street, developed into a hub for the marine industry to help revive the sector which has been affected by loss of the 600 tonne slipway that was sold to make way for the second bridge.

A proposal by council staff for the council to fund a ‘basic' development of the site with a hard stand area and 300 tonne travel lift was rejected in February.

Under the proposal the development would have been paid for from the sale of Glasgow Street properties and the Placemakers site.

In May the council revived plans for the precinct, calling on any interested parties to stump up for the geotechnical survey to ensure the 300tonne marine travel lift can be supported on the reclaimed land.

The question over who will pay for the travel lift, which is needed to attract bigger boats, appears to be another key sticking point with the project.

'We still believe in the opportunity that the site presents for a marine refit and that would be a great boost for Tauranga and would assist the marine sector in what has been a challenging environment.”

He is looking at ways the council can help 'reduce some of the unknowns” and minimise the risk for developers.

Having managed to destry the marine business they now are so hopleless that they won't reinstate what we had. No wonder we have so many unemployed. Despite all the hot air from the various organisations about how business friendly the council is the truth is actually the reverse. Has been for the nearly 40 years I've had business here. Too many socialists and doogooders scooping the rate payer trough.Too many big talkers and no dooer's.

"you da man" so the question is, what do we do about it?, we can whinge and moan as much as we like, but things will not change, ( and they havent for the 30 years I have been an employer, in this town), so until we increase the calibre of the people we elect, nothing will change, so who out there is prepared to "walk the walk" and give this place a kick in the rear, as it is only partly due to the vision of Bob Owens and continued by the Tauranga Port board that the town is not in worse shape than it is in, so to me, it simple...since the Port basically keeps this town alive, why do they not run the place, at least they know how to post a profit, and think of the savings that can be made, by getting rid of an inane, top heavy, bureaucratic management, hell we may even get a vibrant C.B.D out of it!!!!

What to you mean by minimise risk for developers?

Either this marine business stacks up and will return a profit after expenses, or it won't. Reducing the unknowns by being cooperative is fair enough, but isn't how Council should treat all businesses??? But subsidy by stealth or whatever other means is not on. It's not real business if it requires subsidy or guarantee in any form. Council should keep out of business ventures. Just look at the hotel goings on over the past decade.

YOU GOT IT VIKING

Local private busienss survives "DESPITE" Council, they seem to do the best they can to make it as difficult for local businesses not realising that the little wee "juicy" pay packets are all provided by the hand that they bite so willingly!

HOW DID IT STALL?

Becasuse to be able to "stall" means that it actually had to be moving somewhere in the first place? We all know that this was another one of those "NOT going to happen" type schemes dreamed up by the "Ted (ops Terry) and Bill" show! Thsi was never going to fly, not even a possibility of floating!
