Hairy bronzed and Dutch dancers

Urban dancers in the Tauranga City Council chambers and the first pictures of Hairy Maclary in bronze marked creative Tauranga's six monthly monitoring report to council on Monday.

Urban Dance Hysteria is the first junior division team from the Bay of Plenty to be selected to represent New Zealand at the FISAF International World Fitness and Hip Hop competition in the Netherlands in October.

Saying that it was not just for dance but also for fitness, Creative Tauranga chief executive Tracey Rudduck Gudsell's offer of dance lessons for city councillors was not taken up.

Next on the agenda was the Hairy Maclary waterfront statue, which is now cast in bronze.

Sculptor Brigitte Wuest is now working on Bottomly Potts, all covered in spots, says Tracey. Muffin McLay like a bundle of hay will be the third of the Donaldson's Dairy crew to be cast in bronze for the waterfront sculpture.

Creative Tauranga has raised $300,000 of the $800,000 required for the sculptures.

In other creative news, last summer's experimental SummerFest has secured sponsorship from 2Degrees and Coke to make it an annual event, says Tracey.

'The demand has been so high. The 2013 event will be held at the same venue, but we might outgrow it,” says Tracey.

The non-alcohol youth oriented event was held at Blake Park earlier this year.

Sculptures underway, but who pays if there's a shortfall?

Since $300,000 of the $800,000 has been raised, that leaves $500,000 to find. Just wondering how wise it is to have begun the work and who will pay if the money isn't raised? Surely there can't be any call on Council funds or further grants from Tect, Bay Trust etc. Come on art lovers, dig deep into your pockets.
