Fire and Emergency are at the scene of a "scrub and grass fire" in Kairua, near Welcome Bay.

Northern communications shift manager Lauren Sika says the fire is about a 10 metre square.

"The initial call we received was at 9.43am."

"The fire is currently under control.

"We are still in attendance. We did have to ask train control to stop trains for a moment, but the fire crew have now given the green light for the trains to start up again now."
