Tauranga City Councillor Hayden Evans is demanding a public apology from Mayor Stuart Crosby following the latest round of accusations.
The mayor last week accused Councillor Evans of threatening a member of the public on the council's website, says Hayden.
Tauranga City Councillor Hayden Evans.
'I didn't do anything of the kind,” says Hayden.
'Stuart Crosby gave them a cock and bull story saying I had threatened a member of the public. He's not a member of the public, he's very close to council. How do I know? –because I did a trace on the son of a gun.”
On the forum on the city council website, user 'R Payer” asked how councillors who have their driver's licence suspended can claim travel expenses from the council. The post is dated February 16 at 3.31pm – the day after councillor Mike Baker challenged Hayden's suitability to continue serving on the joint road transport committee following his recent disqualification on a drink driving conviction.
Hayden believes the question was posted by someone close to the council because it was made only hours after he put in the claim for travel expenses.
On Monday, Mayor Stuart Crosby says he was asked if Hayden's behaviour was appropriate.
'And I said no it's not,” says Stuart.
'I think the public would expect certain standards by elected members in their interacting with the community, and threatening people isn't appropriate behaviour.
'The community are entitled to ask myself or any elected member the hard questions, and they should be answered as best as possible with the information you have at any point in time, in an appropriate manner.”
Stuart says Hayden has a history of threatening staff, councillors and neighbours.
'And people online now – it's not new,” says Stuart.
'I have a file full of complaints about his behaviour. Myself and the deputy mayor have had discussions with him about the appropriateness of his behaviour when he interacts with the community.
It is up to the community to decide about Hayden, says Stuart.
'They elected him, they need to make their judgement.”
On Tuesday Hayden said he's recevied an apology from the Tauranga radio station that broadcast the the mayor's allegations.
He also says he's had issues with two neighbours, one who persisted in opening his gates at 3am, allowing cattle to wander after Hayden refused to sell land to him.
"I never threatened him, I went to the police," says Hayden.
Another neighbour cut holes in a fence and set up a garden on Hayden's land. Hayden says he took legal action, but never threatened the neighbour.

The Mayor has made a number of statements over the above subject. The latest of these is that I have threatened a number of my neighbors this is also untrue. I am formally requesting his proof from the mayor to back up his statements or withdraw his further lies Hayden
