Hockey Without Limits is a programme which delivers all students aged 8 - 21 with special needs, the experience of playing a fast-paced sport in a friendly environment to make a positive impact on their physical and mental well-being.

Once a week, students from Tauranga’s primary, intermedia and colleges meet at the court to improve their motor skills and have fun playing hockey says Tauranga Hockey Association Community Engagement Lead Ruth Tuiraviravi.

“This year around 90 students have been registered in the programme, which offers the possibility of playing hockey in an inclusive and safe environment.”

“The programme involves a variety of generic and specific hockey games and activities that encourage hand-eye coordination, fundamental movement, agility and sport-specific skills. We also have different equipment to meet the needs of the participants. “

According to Ruth, the principal objectives of Hockey Without Limits are:

  • To create opportunities to develop hockey skills and an understanding of the game of hockey, through fun activities, over a specific period.
  • Modified and adapted hockey equipment, activities, and game format to meet the needs of the participants.
  • Provide a stress-free, inclusive learning environment that encourages independence, self-confidence and communication.

Tauranga hockey has a group of volunteers who alongside the caregivers of the students guide them through all the knowledge and the practice of this sport which is well received by the community, says Ruth.

All the sessions take place at the Tauranga Hockey Association, in Mount Maunganui. The next encounter is next Tuesday, November 7, and the last one of the year will be on Tuesday, November 14 weather dependant.

“For the last session of this year, Tauranga hockey has organised a morning of hockey games, where students will learn the value of playing as part of a team, followed by a barbeque to close the season 2023,” says Tauranga Hockey Association Community Engagement Lead Ruth Tuiraviravi.
