A magnitude 6.9 earthquake has struck the Banda Sea region in Indonesia according to the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre.
The quake struck at 5.52pm NZ time.
The quake was 370 km southeast of Ambon, Indonesia and estimated to be at a depth of 10km.
"Based on all available data, there is no tsunami threat from this earthquake," says a spokesperson from the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre in Honolulu.
The Banda Sea is one of four seas that surround the Maluku Islands of Indonesia, connected to the Pacific Ocean, but surrounded by hundreds of islands, including Timor, as well as the Halmahera and Ceram Seas.
