Lining up early for mayor

Nominations for October's local government elections open on July 23, and there are already three Tauranga mayoral candidates; the incumbent Stuart Crosby, councillor Murray Guy and Jill Parry.
Councillor Mike Baker is confirmed as a "more than likely, probably" too.

Stuart Crosby, Murray Guy and Jill Parry are all confirmed candidates for the Tauranga mayoralty race this year.

Bill Faulkner stood for mayor last election, and could not be contacted. Catherine Stewart could not be contacted either. The rest of the councillors do not intend standing for mayor.

In other election developments Mark Groos is offering $500 in a competition for filling out a questionnaire on the Tauranga Community Values website.
Mark is not standing for Mayor, but Tauranga Community Values intend to put people forward at the right time.
"We are just finding out - what does the community think about the current situation," says Mark.
The questionnaire is viewable at http://www.more4less.co.nz/

Its questions include:

Is Council's plan to increase rates by 36% in the next 3 years acceptable?

Is Mayor Stuart Crosby doing a good job?

Are you concerned that TCC has made no provision for the potential multi-million dollar Council liability for leaky homes?

I find it interesting to see that Murray Guy has put his hand up Mayor I guess this would come as no surprise to anyone following local body politics lately! It seem s that he has been positioning himself for this role for quite sometime and now he has come out of the wood work. As in any election there is a role out of peoples dirty laundry and it is surprising what is unearthed. I hope councillor Guy is prepared to take the heat that goes with the territory. There could well be some interesting revealations over the next few months when it comes to his past indiscretions Socrates says "False words are not only evil in them selves they infect the soul with evil"

$500 is no issue. More important is that teh information gathered is listened to, unlike the current city hall "inmates". Feedback is only of any use is used / heard / acted upon. Rate increases of 36% will occur OR MORE (more likely) even things like water rates or anything else that can be shunted through will be hiked to try and hide the real rate increases occurring. If this is good governance then god help us all !
