A man is to appear in court on Monday after being arrested for stealing bank cards from a motorist who was suffering a medical event.
Police in Tauranga have arrested the person who stole a woman’s purse and bankcards from her husband’s phone case while her husband suffered a medical event.
The couple were driving down Te Awanui Drive in heavy traffic on Monday November 27 heading towards Mount Maunganui when the man suffered a medical event.
Members of the public stopped and assisted until emergency services arrived and the man was taken to hospital.
"Obviously distressed from the incident, a local Police officer drove the woman to hospital to be with her husband," says a Police spokesperson.
"On the way to the hospital the woman discovered her purse was missing.
"When she returned to the vehicle later, she discovered that her husband’s bank cards had been removed from his phone case."
Police say calls to her bank confirmed both the cards taken from her purse and her husband’s phone case had been used at various retail outlets in the area.
"A 40-year-old man, matching clothing of one of the people who had stopped to assist during the event, has been arrested and charged with theft and using a stolen card," says a Police spokesperson.
He is due to appear in Tauranga District Court on Monday December 11.

Hopefully the police and more importantly the justice system/ judge read SunLive
Lets all agree that this crime is as low as you can get, robbing a kiwi fighting for his life as his wife and helpers perform CPR on him , some bottom feeder helps themselves to the wife's purse and the sick guys bank cards then rushes away to a vape shop etc and steals their money!
Jail this fool, don't let us read that he has had a rough upbringing, was drunk, on P or whatever and he can stay home on home detention.
Give them whatever they deserve, no soft favours
Indeed dave4u.....

....we have stooped to even lower levels than thought possible. When someone supposedly pretends to assist in an emergency and does this, then we can only hope that karma helps out in the future, by that time we will have lost faith and will not help this type of person anyhow and with any luck the worst will happen.
Karma buddy....it's comin' for you and people like you....

Now, send a very clear message to this lowlife piece of scum when they get their day in court.
Opportunism.

I had the same disbelief that Dave4U expressed, but then I decided to try and think how this could even happen. The thief is obviously an opportunist; he didn't set out or plan to steal the items, but when the opportunity presented itself, he couldn't resist. We can only imagine what would drive someone to such a level of opportunism... How can you have so little character or decency? I HOPE there is addiction or some equal level of blank despair behind this, because if there isn't, and the guy just thought it was OK to take the pennies from heaven, then I shudder to see the kind of people we are raising. I thought the Defibrillator was rock bottom (glad I was wrong), but this is equally amoral and I hope it was not committed by someone we would consider "normal".
Pathetic
