Police investigating a fatal fire on Great Barrier Island late last week have referred the death to the Coroner.
Police were called to assist Fire and Emergency NZ at a Motairehe Road property at around 12.45am on Friday following a report of a fire.
"Sadly one person was located deceased at the scene," says a police spokesperson.
"A scene examination has since been completed and the fire is not being treated as suspicious.
"Police are still working to notify the next of kin and the death will now be referred to the Coroner.
"Police would like to acknowledge and thank the Great Barrier Island community for the assistance and support they provided to emergency services responding to this incident."
