One person is dead following a crash in Mount Maunganui.

Emergency services were called to the crash around 10.30pm.

Police confirmed the fatality in an updated statement to SunLive this morning.

"Police can confirm one person died after a crash last night at the intersection of Aerodrome Road and Hewletts Road, Mount Maunganui.

"One person died at the scene and another was taken to hospital with moderate injuries.

"Enquiries are ongoing to determine the cause of the crash."

 The road was closed for several hours between McDonald and Maru streets and was reopned around 4am.
