Some of New Zealand’s top shearers will have their hand piece ready to race this Saturday, January 13, as the 22nd Te Puna Speed Shear gets underway 5.30pm.

Spokesperson Maree Morton says after a few years missed and venue changes, the event is back tomorrow at The Point Ale House, 17 Plummers Point Rd, Whakamārama.

“Shearing a lamb in 16 seconds can you believe it? This event is not for beginners. Shearers that compete travel far and wide to test their skills in shearing a lamb really quickly.”

Maree says Te Puna Speed Shear is a not-for-profit event run by a small group of people – this year’s fundraiser recipients are Assistance Dogs New Zealand and the local rescue helicopter.

“We have great sponsors plus an army of amazing volunteers who donate their time to make this event happen.”

Te Puna Speed Shear is on Saturday, January 13 at The Point Ale House, Whakamārama, from 5.30pm with prizegiving to follow once shearing is finished.

Entry is gold coin, with spot prizes, raffles, a chiller – donated by Spencer Contractors – to be sold on the night. “There will be a food and chilled drinks to purchase – so come and see some of NZ’s top shearers compete!” More information, at ‘Te Puna Speed Shear’ on Facebook.
