Thieves ransacking a vessel have marred the reunion of a Coromandel fisherman and his boat.
Fisherman Will Fransen fell overboard while reeling in a marlin on a solo fishing trip and spent 23.5 hours in the water before being found.
The fisherman’s boat was found later on a stony East Cape Beach on Sunday, January 14.
Betty Gee’s exterior is in top shape and the vessel is not leaking, but the interior is a different story.

The thieves left the inside of the vessel in a state and stole numerous items including solar panels, tools, clothing, chilly bins, fishing reels and a brand new dingy from the roof of the boat, says Bridge Marine Travelift owner Bruce Goodchap.
A video camera was also stolen off the boat which would have captured Will falling off the boat and the thieves looting the vessel.
Some thieves have returned some of the items after intimidation from members of the public.
The locals are very willing to help Will in any way they can.

The matter of the items stolen has been reported to Police.
The boat arrived in the Tauranga Harbour today, after being towed from the East Cape Beach.
The vessel is currently being inspected and repairs are being made, says Bruce.
Bruce says Will is incredibly lucky to have survived and for his boat to be in such good shape.
“Will should consider himself very lucky, he has a lot to be grateful for.”
