Update, 7.30pm: State Highway 2 remains closed east of the SH2/SH27 intersection at Mangatarata.

SH2 closed following a serious crash reported to Police at 3.10pm.

"Please continue to avoid the area and use alternative routes where possible," says an NZTA Waka Kotahi spokesperson.

"Police serious crash unit is in attendance at this incident and the road will likely remain closed for several hours this afternoon/evening."

Earlier, 4.20pm: State Highway 2 near Ngatea is closed due to a serious crash.

"Orchard West Road/SH2 is closed following a serious crash," says a police spokesperson.

The two-vehicle crash was reported to Police at 3.10pm.

Initial indications are that there are serious injuries.

Motorists are advised to avoid the area.

NZTA Waka Kotahi advise that due to the serious crash near Canal East Rd, SH2 road is closed and an alternative route is available.

For eastbound traffic, turn left onto Canal East Rd, right onto SH25, right onto Pipiroa Rd, and left onto SH2.

For westbound, turn right onto Pipiroa Rd, left onto SH25, and rejoin SH2.

It is unknown how long SH2 will be closed.

The Serious Crash Unit are in attendance.
