What is sustainable fishing anyway?

What is sustainable fishing?

This is the topic for the first fascinating Cafe Scientifique Tauranga meeting for 2024 at the Tauranga Yacht & Powerboat Club on February 26.

"Cafe Scientifique welcomes Alex Webb to inform us on sustainable fishing and the meaning of the MSC blue tick label," says organisers Warren and Julia Banks.

Have you ever wondered what happens to enable a fish product to carry the MSC blue fish tick label for sustainable fishing?

And what is sustainable fishing anyway! Is it the amount of fish we take? The way we fish?

Are any species of fish more sustainable than others? And how sustainable is fishing on the whole anyway?

New Zealand claims to be clean and green but how does New Zealand perform globally in sustainable fishing?

These questions and more will be answered by Alex, the Marine Stewardship Council Oceania’s Senior Communications and Marketing Specialist.

Currently based in Sydney, Alex has worked with top level fisheries scientists from around the world to lead global and regional sustainable seafood campaigns across 22 different countries.

Alex is a communications and marketing specialist with the Marine Stewardship Council, an organisation on a mission to end overfishing by means of better awareness among consumers and businesses.

He began his sustainable seafood journey in the UK at the Marine Stewardship Council’s London HQ, and has dedicated over 11 years of his career to advancing the cause of sustainable seafood.

At the meeting on February 26, Alex will also discuss interesting innovations happening in the industry; and how, in such a global industry we can use science to help manage traceability and combat fish fraud.

Cafe Scientifique Tauranga monthly meetings are popular and well-attended with interesting topics and speakers often facing an audience of well over 100 people.

A community project organised by Julia and Warren Banks, Saffron Consulting Ltd, the meetings provide a chance to learn about real science for the price of a cup of coffee.

In November 140 came to hear a presentation on waste management in the Bay of Plenty.

A $10 door fee covers venue hire and nibbles. Eftpos is available.
Register here for the event, which runs from 7pm - 9pm on Monday, February 26.
