A launch that has grounded along the Coromandel peninsula is due to be removed over the next day by authorities if the owner hasn't removed it.

Coromandel's CFM are reporting that Waikato Regional Council became aware of Dream Catcher, a 36-foot launch which had washed up on rocks at Waiomu, through social media posts on Sunday night.

Attempts by Waikato Regional Council’s Regional On Scene Commander to contact the boat’s owner on Monday were unsuccessful.

Staff from the council's Maritime Services team undertook an assessment of the vessel on Monday to determine if there was any risk of oil or diesel escaping into the environment, and whether to deploy sorbent booms if required to contain any spill.

Contact was also being made by Waikato Regional Council with nearby mussel farm owners to alert them to the incident.

"We have received a number of updates from Waikato Regional Council regarding the grounding of the launch Dream Catcher," says a Coromandel's CFM spokesperson.

"Based on information from the owner, it would appear that a number of items had been stolen from the boat overnight, including up to 80 litres of fuel.

"Based on this information, they believed the tanks to be empty and therefore the environmental risk low."

Coromandel's CFM say that the Maritime Services team remained at the location while the owner made attempts to refloat the vessel on the high tide yesterday afternoon.

"The vessel has at least two holes – one in the stern and another on the waterline on the starboard side – so there is a high likelihood it will take on water and sink quickly.

"Sorbent booms have been brought to site and deployed along the shoreline, and offered for use by the vessel’s owner.

"The Waikato Regional Harbourmaster has advised the owner that the vessel is considered wreckage and that if it is not removed from the beach over the next day, it will be removed and disposed of by Maritime Services."
