The gloves are off again

Robert Steedman has managed to wrangle a team of his Vale Street neighbours to join his fundraiser Challenge Quiz.

And he’s been working on businesses, clubs and other organisations to enter teams for the second Living Grace Fellowship Quiz, happening at the Senior Citizens Hall in Norris Street this evening.

“Ideally there will be a cross section of the community for the quiz,” says organiser Robert Steedman.

“And it’ll be win/win for everyone involved – a business team might draw new clients, a club might draw new members, and we will raise funds for the kids in the Philippines.”

These are feeding funds – because money raised will be used to sustain a meal programme for more than 250 primary and intermediate level schoolchildren in Lantuyan Village in the foothills in Occidental Mindoro Philippines.

“They come from very poor families and with it comes scarcity of food and many of the basic needs we enjoy in New Zealand,” says Robert.

“The kids walk almost three hours a day to come to school so they can be fed.

“I suppose there is a selfish gene in us all. But there is also humanity that ensures we care for everyone everywhere. We can see beyond New Zealand.”

To date there is just one name on the Living Grace Fellowship Quiz trophy. That’s Gate Pa Tennis Club.

“They’ll be back defending their title,” says Robert. “And they’re saying while they may get beaten on the court, they won’t be beaten at the quiz. But let the other tennis clubs try.”

Last year the quiz contestants were asked if they would like it to be an annual event and there was unanimous agreement.

To help improve some little lives 8,000kms away, Robert needs 15 teams of six members to join the quiz.

The quiz is this evening, Saturday March 2 at the Senior Citizens Hall, 14 Norris Street, Tauranga, starting at 6pm.

Tables are $96 for a team of six – $16 a head. To enter a team call Robert Steedman on 027 248 7525. Or email him at rlsteedman@gmail.com
