New Katikati boat ramp plans floated

Plans are being floated with the Katikati community to see the long-awaited upgrade of the Beach Road boat ramp.

The proposed transformation, led by Western Bay of Plenty District Council, is to make improvements to the Beach Road boat ramp, esplanade foreshore reserve, MacMillan Reserve, and 294 Beach Road.

If everyone is on board, the improvements will include raising and widening the first 30 metres of the boat ramp, installation of cultural and historical features, creating more open green space for new picnic areas, upgrading the public rest rooms, and adding more public car parking, including dedicated boat trailer parking for the boating community.

To get to this point, Council worked with local hapū, Ngāi Tamawhariua and the Katikati Boating Club to understand the importance of the area and its many uses. This informed the development of a draft plan that enhances this space, so it meets the diverse needs of the community and incorporating the rich cultural and historical heritage of the area.

“Katikati’s Beach Road boat ramp and surrounding area has long served as a popular area for recreational activities for the Katikati community,” says Council’s Senior Recreational Planner Jason Crummer.

“Whether you’re tāngata whenua, water enthusiasts, walkers, cyclists, freedom campers, or visitors, this plan has the potential to benefit everyone.

“We invite the Katikati community to share their feedback on the draft concept plan, what improvements could be made, and which aspects are important to them. This feedback will inform decision making and guides our ongoing work to shape the future of this area.”

My late father and I used to take ou "light weight" boat down to the end of Park Road, 60 - yes 60 odd years ago, and stick it in the water - it needed to be ONE hour either side of high tide otherwise it was mudflats ! The fishing in that "little bay" of the Tauranga harbour was great - especially at night - flounder (with a net) & snapper - OH and if you knew where to look, BIG rock oysters on the mangroves !!!! Unless the BOPRC are going to continue to dredge a channel out to the water from Beach Road - it will still be 3/4 hour usable boat ramp - two hours either either side of high tide.

And unless I am mistaken the boat ramp at the same problem will be

!
