Reports are coming in of armed police at Tauranga Hospital.

Members of the public have contacted SunLive to report an armed police presence on hospital grounds.

One reader says the hospital has been placed into lockdown.

"There are police with guns and no ones allowed inside," says the reader.

"I'm currently inside the hospital with my mother, who's unwell, but I went to go to the cafe and couldn't get through," 

"The police are not allowing any public movement within the hospital. No one's allowed inside, and once you leave, you can't come back in.

"The nurse said someone has made a threat to the hospital why the police are here and armed."

Another person, who called SunLive on the 0800 SUNLIVE news hotline, says “I just went to Tauranga Hospital at 11am and got turned away from the main entrance because the hospital is in lockdown.”

A police spokesperson confirms the hospital has been locked down as a "precaution.

"The police are aware of a threat made over the phone and the hospital has locked down as a precaution.

"Staff are responding to the area to assess any threat and provide reassurance."
