Heads roll over rates cheque

Councillor Hayden Evans' overdue rates remain unpaid, in spite of a cheque for the amount being written two weeks ago.

Hayden Evans.

His former accountants have been fired because they put the money in the wrong account at the wrong bank, says Hayden.
'You have no idea how wild I was,” says Hayden.
He is also unhappy how the story leaked out. Hayden contacted council staff early Tuesday afternoon to advise them of the problem, before the bank contacted the council.
'I rang the council and told them what the story was, and within a short time of that call, Mike Baker was telling Rick Curach about me bouncing a cheque.
'How the hell did that get out? The confidentiality clause they (council staff) all sign is not worth the paper it is written on.
'It is a breach of the privacy act. I haven't done anything wrong. I have never bounced a cheque in my life,” says Hayden.
The cheque for $9,957 was for rates Hayden didn't pay during a dispute with the council dating from before he was a city councillor.
The rates were paid after the argument over a pipeline easement went to mediation.
The money is now in the correct account and is available when the council re-presents the cheque, says Hayden.

Perhaps his "former accountants" were pleased to be fired ?
