New Zealand Community Trust has awarded a $9240 operational grant to the Eastern Bay Accessible Transport Trust for their Waka Eastern Bay volunteer driven community shuttle service.

This service provides critical support to the area’s elderly, disabled and geographically isolated members of the community.

The WEB service, launched in August 2023, has made a hugely positive impact on isolated members of the Eastern Bay of Plenty community, by providing affordable transport that helps isolated people to connect socially as well as ensure they have access to medical and other critical appointments.

Demand for WEB has continued to surge and has recently led to the recruitment of a paid part time driver who has experience in providing the service to people who require extra support, such as wheelchair users and individuals with vision loss.

The organisation aims to keep community members connected while meeting their health and wellbeing needs by filling transport gaps in the region. Photo supplied.

"Having a part-time driver alongside our volunteer drivers is essential for our community transport service.

"While volunteer drivers are invaluable, a part-time driver provides consistency and reliability for our passengers," says project manager and executive officer, Reneé Lubbe.

Waka Shuttle passenger, Adrian Wellington says “I’m a paraplegic, now sixty-nine and rely on the Waka Shuttle to go to my medical appointments and shopping trips.

"Their service is beyond my wildest expectations as it allows me to make real choices in my life.

For individuals requiring transport, registration with the organisation and completion of health and safety information is the first step. Photo supplied.

"As it can take up to fifteen minutes to transfer from my chair into the van, the driver shows great patience and consideration. Without it, I would be stuck at home.”

NZCT’s GM Grants, marketing and communications, Ben Hodges says ‘’It's important that everyone has access to social connections and the resources they need.

"WEB helps ensure isolated members of the community don’t miss out.

"We’re delighted our responsible gaming fundraising partnerships with Cobb and Co Whakatane and the Kawerau Hotel help to make such a positive contribution to the community. "

Registered passengers can easily schedule their rides by calling 027 407 7526 and requesting bookings with a minimum of twenty-four hours' notice. Photo supplied.
