With great weather, it's been another full-on week for the Waihi Golf Club.

Club member Rodger Bagshaw is reporting on the week that was.

SATURDAY LADIES PENNANTS VICTORY:

For the second year in succession the Saturday Ladies won the Bay of Plenty Saturday Ladies Pennant Competition.

A fine effort with Waihi winning with 210 points, while Omanu was second on 189.5.

The Waihi team was Karen Diggelmann, Jane Wordley, Michelle Libby, Jackie Robson, Susan Mustard, Cathrine Blake, Phillipa Harvey, and Kaylene Croker.

On Sunday, May 5, the Waihi 29 Hole Mixed Foursomes was held in sunny conditions.

Twenty-four couples enjoyed this unique annual event.

The Gross winners were Carol Leary & David P. Campbell, with David & Tamara Morris R/up.

The Nett winners were Jenny Tubman & Des Crene, with Bev Ireland & Vaughn Meads R/up, while the Stableford honours were won by David & Liz Seager (Ngahinipouri), with Mark & Sarah Tomsett R/up.

The only hole in two was scored by David & Tamara Morris.

VETRANS GOLF:

On Monday the Waihi Quartz pennants team contested the Waikato Vets Final, but after winning their Zone, they finished a creditable fifth.

They and the other teams have performed well in the now completed competition.

At the regular club day, 40 vets competed in a stableford haggle which saw Tom Wallace have a great reversal of form to score 40 points.

Next was John Giffney on 39, with Rodger Bagshaw 38. Richard Cullerton and Ken Mustard both had 37. There were 10 Weasels recorded.

NINE HOLE GOLF:

This week it was a stableford haggle, with Margaret Meldrum having the top score of 22 points. Next were Lorraine Meyer and John Vautier with 21, while John Twemlow had 19, and Tukatara Tangiia 18.

Jill Morrison and Alison Williams both finished with 17 points.

WEDNESDAY LADIES:

A good field contest this week’s nett haggle.

The top score was a 71 nett sored by Kay Marshall, with Jill Morrison and Jenny Tubman next with72.

Jan Robinson and Rae Brown had 73, with Denise McConnon, Rae Wright, Adele Gunning, and Karen Lee all with 74.

The Hidden Holes with 7 points were shared by Jill Morrison, Jenny Tubman, and Desley Rosevear. The “Dreamers Player of the Week” was Phillipa Harvey for her 68 nett.

THURSDAY MEN:

Conditions were different with the first cold southerly wind of the Autumn.

In the Morning Haggle, Div one was topped by Norm Sanderson and Ted Murray both with 45 points.

Next was John Giffney (34), and Jim Powell (33).

In Div Two, once again Pete Rowe had 41 points, with Alan Kurtovich next on 38. With Graham Leigh (36), and Raymond Fisher (35) the next.

In the Afternoon Haggle, Gary Morrison was the best with 40 points, With Malcolm Coldicutt next with 39, then Murray Butterworth on 38.

Frank Van Hattum, Bill Young, and Craig Pooley all Had 37.

SATURDAY GOLF:

After a delayed start due to frost for the morning fields, players enjoyed a nice day.

LADIES:

The haggle of the day was nett, and Kaylene Croker top scored with a nett 69, and also won the hidden hole with 8 points.

Second was Robyn Kirby with 72, then Shelly Lithgow 73. With 75 were Bev Ireland, Denise Donald, and Phillipa Harvey. Karen Digglemann scored the only two.

MORNING MEN:

Tom Wallace streaked the field with the day’s best score of 44 points. Second was Mark Mora with 38, then Al McMillan, Vaghn Meads, and John Libby with 37 points each.

AFTERNOON MEN:

It was a tight affair to achieve ascendancy in the afternoon haggle with Brian Doherty, Graeme Parkinson, and David P. Campbell all scoring 39 points.

Mike Rose was next with 38, then Eddie Evans and Ian Diver on 37, with Murray Fraser and Peter Dagg with 36 points.
