Waihi ladies win two BOP pennants titles

The Waihi Ladies Midweek Matchplay Pennants teams had a day to remember on Friday by achieving two outstanding results.

Playing on their home course, the Silver Division team not only won the day’s competition, but also in doing so won the 2024 Bay of Plenty title.

Not to be outdone, the Waihi Bronze team also won their day’s competition for the bronze division, and now they have also won the Bay of Plenty Title for the Bronze Division.

MONDAY VETS:

A chilling southerly wind kept the field of vet’s well rugged-up on Monday morning.

The competition of the day was putting, and while he had some difficulty keeping some of his tee shots on the course, John Libby proved to be the best putter on the day by only having 28 putts on his round. Next with 30 putts were Ken Purcell, Adele Gunning, and John Saunders.

The group with 31 putts were Tim Parish, Norm Sanderson, Bob Hoggard, John Giffney, and Rob Morrison. Scoring holes in two were Heather White, Tim Parish, Sam Gurney, and Neil Walker.

Tuesday’s weather cancelled any play for the nine-hole section.

WEDNESDAY LADIES:

This week’s stableford haggle was a terrific win by Jacquie Bain with a great 43 points. Dot Ramsey was second with a good 40 points, followed by Annette Hetherington with 38. Diane Lockwood and Denise McConnon both had 36 points.

The Hidden Holes was shared with 8 points each by Annette Hetherington and Susan Mustard. The “Dreamers Player of the Week” was Shelly Lithgow with her 67 nett.

HUME MONTHLY MEAT PACK TOURNAMENT:

Early starters for this month’s tournament had to contend with some cool showers, but thankfully the weather cleared as the day wore on.

The major winners for the May tournament were, for the best Gross, Andy Roche scored 77 for his round, while Mark Hume with 67 had the best nett. The ever-present Ken Purcell had the best stableford score of 40 points, by countback.

Other scores were, in Division One, David P. Campbell also had 40, with Graeme Parkinson, Wilson Mc Gillivray, and Mark Tomsett all on 38, then John Giffney 34.

In Division Two, Francis Gascoigne scored 38 points, then it was down to Damian Dunlop, and Pete Rowe on 35. Cameron Ayson (Redwood Park), Craig Sandlant, and Murray Butterworth all had 34 points, with Alan Kurtovich having 33.

SATURDAY LADIES:

This week’s stableford haggle saw 38 points the top score which was won by Karen Roche, with Denise Donald second with 37. Liz Hale had 35. Then Karen May and Sharon Deacon had 33.

The Hidden Hole was shared by Liz Hale and Karen May with 8 points each.  

SATURDAY MEN:

The Morning Haggle in Division One, was won by Sam Gurney with 39 points, with Curtiss Osborne and Allen Smith next with 35. Daryll Denyer, Brian Robinson, and John Libby each had 33 points..

In Division Two, Al McMillan shot 39 points, to head off Francis Gascoigne with 37, while Stephen Bailey had 35. Allen Smith and Daryll Denyer both scored twos.

In the Afternoon Haggle, Mark Hume continued his run of form, topping the field with 41 points, with Dave Morris next on 39.

Trevor Coombes had 37, then Chris Spears and Russell Dewey with 35, with Eddie Evans, Richard Taitoko, Dylan West, and Jonathan Clare all on 33 points.

Twos were scored by Simon Mustard, Jason Baldwin, Dave Morris, and Malcom Coldicutt.
