Good golfing week weatherwise at Waihi

Waihi Golf Club member Rodger Bagshaw reports on the week that was at Waihi Golf Club, June 4-7.

NINE HOLE SECTION:

After a cold and blustery Kings Birthday Weekend, Tuesday was much better weatherwise for the section’s Tuesday stableford haggle.

Top scorer for the day was Tukatara Tangiiaa with a very good 21 points, but just heading off Vicky Knight and Glen Bennett who both finished with 20 points.

Jan Ferguson was next with 19, and was followed by Mandy Piper, Eleanor Koedyk, and Jenni Mora, who all had 18 points.

WEDNESDAY LADIES:

The competition for the Ladies this week was a nett haggle. Leading the field was Jan Robinson with a nett 70, with Viv Lilley, Adele Gunning, and Di Lewis next all with nett 72’s.

On 75 were Rosalind Giffney and Helen Baynes, then Avon Gordon and Jill Morrison on 76 nett. The Hidden Hole was won by Jenny Tubman with 8 points.

THURSDAY MEN:

Good fields contested the two stableford haggles this week. In the Morning Haggle, in Division One, John Giffney was the winner with 36 points, while Hamish Wilson (Wanaka) was second with 34.

Next was Vince Jones with 33, while Rob Morrison and Sam Gurney had 32. In Division Two, Peter Hewitt had the best round of the morning with 37 points. Next were David Croker, Bob Hoggard, and Neil Walker, all with 36 points, with Raymond Fisher next with 34.

In the Afternoon Haggle, Graeme Culton had an excellent round with 43 points, with David P, Campbell continuing his good form with 40 points.

Third was Nic Davies with 39 points, then Damian Dunlop, Eddie Evans, and Wilson McGillivray all with 38 points. Next all on 36 points were Jonathan Clare, Graham Curd, Ian Diver, Mark Hope, Rex Knight, and Rhys Peden.

SATURDAY LADIES:

There was a foggy start for the morning competitions, but it cleared away to be a beautiful clear sunny day. Probably the best autumn day for golf this year.

The ladies haggle this week was a nett medal, and Karen May had the best round with a 72 nett. Next were Phillipa Harvey and Denise Donald with both having 73’s, then Michelle Libby on 74, followed by Karen Roche 75.

The Hidden Hole was shared by Karen May, Denise Donald, and Sharon Deacon, all with 7 points.

SATURDAY MEN:

This week was the first round of the Club Cup Par Competition, and in conjunction with this overall men’s competition the morning haggle was also on par.

In Division One, John Libby was first on +1, with Tayla Turnbull next on even par. Scott Spicer finished on -1, while Ross Sayer and Sam Gurney were -2, next on -3 were Norm Sanderson and Alex Standfield.

In Division Two, Tom Rowbotham struck form to be +3, just ahead of Ken Purcell with +2. All on +1 were Doug Ferguson, Stephen Bailey, and Al McMillan, with Francis Gascoigne ending on even par. Chris Spears scored the only two.

The afternoon haggle was also a par competition, and the top scorers were Wayne Brierley and Mike Rose with both returning nett scores of +2.

Next were the group of Chris Hale, Malcolm Coldicutt, Peter Dagg, and Ian Diver, all on +1. The next best group all on -1 were David Campbell, David Morris, Craig Pooley, Eddie Evans, and Mark Hume.

Twos were recorded by Russell Dewey, Dave Morris, and Logan Phillips.
