The Waihi Golf Club ladies are celebrating their win this week over the men of the club.

On Sunday, June 16, the battle lines were drawn for the annual Men v Ladies Trophy. And boy, are the Ladies bragging, as they defeated the men by five games to three.

Played in great spirits on a lovely calm day, the competition was a 4 ball best ball format.

The player of the day was Ken Purcell with 41 points, and Madz Grey scored two 2’s.

An enjoyable day, but as a member of the Men’s team I suppose I will be hearing about the result from the Lady members for some time to come!

MONDAY VETS:

This week was the first qualifying round of the Nett Medal Matchplay Competition, and as well the day’s haggle was a nett round.

Topping the haggle was the “leader of the band”, the mighty piper Andrew McLennan, with a score of 72 nett.

He was narrowly ahead of Gary Choat, Gary Norman, Nigel Sanderson, and Di Lewis, who were all one behind on 73. Next on 74 were Brian Baynes, John Giffney, and Jenny Tubman.

The only two scored on the day was by Peter Hewitt.

TUESDAY NINE HOLE GOLF:

Good conditions prevailed for the Nine Hole players for their mixed stable ford competition this week.

The most successful player this week was John Twemlow who scored a very good 23 points. Second was Margaret Hickey with 20 points, with Lorraine Meyer and John Vautier next with 18.

Then Jan Ferguson, Jill Mason, and Jill Morrison all had 17 points.

WEDNESDAY LADIES:

The ladies stableford haggle was won by our “pocket rocket” Dot Ramsey with 36 points.

In second place was Karen Lee with 35, (who also scored the only two of the day). Third was Sharon Deacon with 34 points, followed by Phillipa Harvey, Wendy Matutinovich (welcome Back), and Denise McConnon, all with 32 points.

The hidden holes were shared with Wendy Matutinovich and Jenny Tubman with 8 points each.

THURSDAY MEN:

The day was fine, but an icy windy made it uncomfortable for anyone who was not well rugged up.

In the Morning Haggle, John Drent had one of those days where it all went right, winning the haggle with 42 points, and as well taking out the Hidden Hole sweep. In second place was the inevitable Jim Powell with 37, followed by Willie Lynch and Rodger Bagshaw on 35.

Allen Sarjant, Peter Wright, Doug Ferguson, John Giffney, and Bob Hoggard all had 34 points.

The Afternoon Haggle was a victory for Mark Hope with 41 points, who squeaked in one ahead of Mike Rose on 40. Bryan Smith (Walton) and Chris Pilmer both had 39 points, with Murray Fraser next on 37.

Wilson McGillivary, Damian Dunlop, and Tony Iverson (Tieke) all finished with 36 points.

SATURDAY LADIES:

The cold wind saw a smaller field contest a stableford haggle with the scoring reflecting the conditions.

First was Michelle Libby with 36 points, with the new Ladies Captain, Desley Rosevear, second with 32 points.

Then Kathy Ashton had 30, with Shelly Lithgow on 29. The Hidden Hole was shared between Desley Rosevear and Michelle Libby with 7 points each.

SATURDAY MEN:

The main competition of the day was the first round of qualifying for the Flett Trophy.

As well as the Flett qualifying, the day’s haggles were on nett, and in the Morning Division One, Alex Standfield had the best score with 73 nett, with Allen Sarjant, Ken Mustard, John Giffney, and Sam Gurney, all with 74 nett. In Division Two,

Craig Pooley had the round of the morning with 68 nett, while in second were Mark Mora and Doug Ferguson with nett 70’s. Steve Herbert had 74.

In the Afternoon Haggle, Murray Butterworth blitzed the field with a 66 nett, with Tayla Turnbull also having a good score with 68 nett.

Next with 71 were Dave Morris and Russell Dewey, then Mark Hume with 72.

Mark Wickham, Logan Phillips, Bodie Lurman (Omanu), and Frank Van Hattum all on 73.
