An estimated 300 singers with an average age of 83 will be performing for charity at the second annual Bay of Plenty Villages Music Festival in August.
At last year’s inaugural event, six choirs put on two concerts at Bethlehem Baptist Church and raised around $4000 for charities Waipuna Hospice and StarJam.
“They were both so happy,” says event organiser Helena van der Merwe.
“Staff from the Tauranga City Council saw it and were so impressed that this year, they’ve sponsored a bigger venue.”
TCC manager of community development and emergency management Paula Naude says her team was blown away by the talent of the choirs when they performed last year.
“We love seeing our older community share their passion for being on stage and bringing joy to their community,” says Paula.
“We are pleased to support this amazing event, as music plays an important role in people’s lives, brings joy, and gives a reason for communities to come together.”
The concert will be held at Bethlehem Baptist Church on August 10 at 2pm and involves two additional choirs from Althorpe Village and Papamoa Sands.
Support from Omokoroa Country Estate, Metlifecare and Ōmokoroa’s Coffee Club has allowed the printing of tickets, programmes and to get professional sound equipment.
“It’s just huge,” says Helena.
“One of the ladies in our choir is 93 years old. Last year we focussed on older chorale pieces, but this year’s repertoire is much better. We’re performing a huge range of songs that will appeal to so many people.”
Helena says the concerts and preparation is a way to keep people living in retirement villages socially and physically active.
“The people involved find joy in sharing joy,” says Helena.
“One woman who’s been in the village for 20 years heard her sister singing in the choir and was so moved that she donated a cherished porcelain doll to help raise funds. Singing really does have a huge positive impact on all those involved.”
Bay of Plenty Villages’ 2024 Music Festival is 2pm Saturday, August 10, at Bethlehem Baptist Church. Tickets cost $15 each by emailing: helena.vdm@invesure.co.nz
