The kiwifruit industry is set to celebrate the invaluable contributions of Recognised Seasonal Employers workers with the launch of the first-ever RSE Workers’ Sports Festival.

This inaugural event, showcasing the importance of the RSE community, will be held on Thursday, August 22, at Blake Park, Mount Maunganui.

Over 400 participants are expected to engage in rugby sevens, six-a-side volleyball, and seven-a-side football.

The idea for the festival was inspired by a successful RSE Workers Rugby game held last August between postharvest suppliers Seeka and Eastpack.

The game, which drew 60 players from each company and attracted a sizable crowd, highlighted the enthusiasm for sports among RSE workers. This enthusiasm paved the way for the creation of the Sports Festival.

Former All Black and Bay of Plenty Rugby Patron, Graeme Crossman, who also owns Kiwifruit Country Tours, is expressing his support for the event.

“Bay of Plenty Rugby approached us with the concept of the Sports Festival, and Kiwifruit Country Tours is excited to be involved," says Graeme.

"Our business frequently transports RSE workers across the Bay of Plenty, and it’s fantastic to see an event that honours their significant contribution to the kiwifruit industry.”

The festival will feature various sports activities, providing an opportunity for RSE workers to enjoy a day of competitive fun and cultural exchange.

There will also be food carts and music with DJs.

Rachel Lynch, Zespri's Government and Community Relations Manager, emphasizes the importance of the festival.

“After a robust growing season and with our largest-ever crop of 197 million trays of New Zealand fruit, this event is a perfect way to celebrate the end of a successful harvest," says Rachel.

"The RSE workforce has been crucial to our achievements, and we’re thrilled to partner with Bay of Plenty Rugby to show our appreciation.”

Fiji's Minister for Employment Agni Deo Singh came to New Zealand in May 2024 with senior officials from the Ministry and Fiji National Provident Fund to visit Fijians under the Recognised Seasonal Employer Work Scheme.

The Ministerial team commenced their visitation with RSE workers located in the Bay of Plenty region, who are engaged with Eastpack and Seeka employers.

The majority of the workers have been re-engaged for more than three years on a seven-month contractual agreement each year.

More than 150 Fijians are currently employed with Seeka and Eastpack and some are expected to return to Fiji after completing their season.

“Bay of Plenty Rugby is committed to engaging with diverse community groups, and the RSE Sports Festival is a great opportunity to provide RSE workers with a positive experience," says Neil Alton from Bay of Plenty Rugby's Neil Alton.

We are grateful for the support of WaiBOP Football, BOP Volleyball, and our sponsors, including Zespri, FMG, Kiwifruit Country Tours, and Bay Kiwifruit Contracting.”

Neil says the festival’s focus on ‘Connections, Fun, and Culture’ reflects our appreciation for the RSE workers who support the kiwifruit industry.

"It’s going to be an exceptional day to celebrate their hard work and contributions," says Neil.

Entries to the end of season sports festival close on Monday, July 29.
