A major event of the Waihi Men’s Section is the Doug Flett Trophy, for handicap match play, which was decided on Saturday.

Played in biting cold Southerly winds, the two finalists, John Taylor and Rhys Peden fought a tough match over 18 holes.

Playing the 18th the match was all square, but then Rhys’s two metre par putt just shaved the hole, giving the match and title to John Taylor’s Par.

MONDAY VETS:

While several match play matches were being played, 35 players contested a stableford haggle, and the winner with a great round was Neil Walker with 43 points.

Clear second was Wendy Matutinovich with 40 points, ahead of Tom Wallace with 39. Des Crene and Sarah Tomsett both had 38 points, then Peter Hewitt with 37 points.

All with 36 points were Michael Bonnici, Tim Parish, Bruce Rutter, and Susan Mustard.

TUESDAY NINE HOLE SECTION:

Heavy overnight rain passed in time for the week’s nett medal haggle.

Some good scoring resulted in Margaret Hickey winning with a nett 29, with Tukatara Tangiia next on 31. Then John Vautier and Jenni Mora had 33, with Anne-Louise Erceg on 34.

Next were Neil Ritchie, Lorraine Meyer, Julia Nicolson, and Jill Mason, all with 35 nett.

WEDNESDAY LADIES:

This week’s Ladies haggle was a nett medal, and with the top score was Megan Jowsey with a 69 nett. Second was Di Lockwood with 71, then Annette Hetherington on 72.

Avon Gordon and Anke Hermannsdorfer both had 73, while Adele Gunning, Sarah Tomsett, Carol Leary, and Michelle Libby all had nett 74’s.

The Hidden Holes were shared by Michelle Libby and Viv Lilley with both scoring 8 points.

THURSDAY MEN:

After prolonged overnight rain, and with consistent cold drizzle falling there were reduced fields who contested the day’s haggles.

In the Morning Haggle, Mark Mora topped the field with 37 points, with Brian Baynes and Allen Smith next with both on 36. Eddie Ruha and John Giffney both had 34, as did Allen Sarjant and Errol Millar with 33.

In the Afternoon Haggle, it was Wayne Brierley with a nett 38 who was first, with Mark Tomsett second with 37. Terry Gerbich had 36, and Murray Fraser 35, then Gary Choat with 34 nett.

SATURDAY LADIES:

The extremely cold conditions for the Ladies nett medal haggle did not seem to have any adverse-affect for Susan Mustard, who scored a great nett 67.

She finished 7 shots ahead of her nearest opponent Liz Hale with nett 74. Then came Phillipa Harvey 78, Michelle Libby 79. And Robyn Kirby 81. The Hidden Holes was won by Phillipa Harvey with 8 points.

SATURDAY MEN:

The bitter conditions showed up in the Morning Haggle with consistent low scoring. In Div One, Jim Powell with 37 points was the only morning golfer to better his handicap (but he does like to be different!).

Next were Allen Smith and John Libby with 36 points, then Sam Gurney on 35, and Grant Robson with 33. In Div Two, Ross Sayer had the best round with 34 points, with Rodger Bagshaw, Mark Mora, and Roger Kemp all with 33 points. Vince Jones and Norm Sanderson both had 31 points.

There were some better scores in the Afternoon Haggle with Damian Dunlop having an un-believable 44 points, especially given the conditions, to better Graeme Parkinson with good 41 points.

Next was Dave Morris with 39, then Wayne Brierley on 37, and Murray Fraser with 36 points. Wilson McGillivray finished with 35 points.
