Update: 7.50pm: Two people have been taken to hospital following a serious crash on State Highway 2 between Katikati and Waihi.

Police received a report of a two-vehicle crash on SH2 at Tanners Point at about 6.45pm.

"Two people were taken to Tauranga Hospital, in a moderate and serious condition respectively," says a police spokesperson.

"One lane is open now."

Earlier, 7.10pm: Emergency services are responding to a serious vehicle crash on State Highway 2 between Athenree and Katikati.

"A serious crash has been reported to emergency services just north of Tanners Point," says an NZTA Waka Kotahi spokesperson.

"A road closure is possible.

"An update will be provided as soon as more information is available."

Fire trucks from Mayor View, Waihi, and Katikati fire brigades are responding to the scene.

Motorists are advised to take care and follow the direction of emergency services.

It is unknown at this stage if there are any injuries.
