Springing into golf at the Waihi Golf Club

Spring is on its way with Waihi Golf Club members enjoying some fine weather this week following having some golf rained off last week.

Club member Rodger Bagshaw brings us the week that was for Septemer 2 -7:

MONDAY VETS SECTION:

On a glorious day for golf, it seemed that spring had really arrived for the 50 vets in the day’s competition.

The winner of the Stableford was Ken Purcell who also achieved a further milestone by scoring under his age, and by having 41 Stableford points finished ahead of Sarah Tomsett on 37.

Next was Mavis Bruce with 36, and then Kathy Ashton with 35, while on 34 points were Viv Lilley, David Croker, Paul Morgan, and Allen Smith.

It was also Weasels Day, and only Errol Millar (2) and Vince Jones recorded the feat.

TUESDAY NINE HOLE SECTION:

After being rained off last week, a good field turned out for this week’s Stableford haggle.

It was John Mangu who had the best score with a very good 25 points, and he was followed by Tangiia Tukatara, Liz Wylie, and Lorraine Meyer who all finished with 19 points.

Next was Vicky Knight on 18, then Neil Ritchie and Jenni Mora on 17 points.

WEDNESDAY LADIES:

Better weather this week realised a better field for this week’s nett haggle.

Top score of the day went to Rosalind Giffney with a nett 72, with Megan Jowsey one shot behind with 73.

Helen Baynes and Kristine Gascoigne both had 74 nett, with Kathy Ashton on 75, and Jenny Tubman 76. Rosalind Giffney also won the Hidden Holes with 8 points.

THURSDAY MEN:

A good morning field enjoyed the fine weather, and in Div. One, Francis Gascoigne and Paul Morgan both scored 38 points.

Next were Brian Baynes, Allen Smith, and Nigel Sanderson all with 36 points, followed by Tayla Turnbull, Don Mackay, and Brian Verryt all with 35.

In Div. Two, Kevan Stewart led the way with 38 points, followed by Bill Tiffin and Kevin McLoughlin on 37. Ray Fisher, David Ashton, and Doug Ferguson all had 36 points.

In The Afternoon Haggle it was a slightly smaller field than usual, but it was Mark (Sparky) Bryant that topped the field with 38 points.

Next all with 37 points were Terry Gerbich, Eddie Evans, and Alistair Cochrane, while Damian Dunlop and Ian Diver had 36, and Kelly Exelby finished with 35.

SATURDAY GOLF:

After last week’s washed-out Saturday, it was great to have a fine day this week, but players did have to contend with a very strong westerly wind.

LADIES:  

This week played a nett medal haggle, and the winner was the Captain Desley Rosevear with a nett 75.

Second was Michelle Libby with 76, followed by Liz Hale, and Megan Jowsey who both had 77. Desley Rosevear also won the Hidden Holes with 33 points.

MORNING MEN:

In the Stableford haggle, top scorers were Mark Mora and Graham O’Dwyer who both had 38 points.

All with 37 points were John Libby, Doug Ferguson, Jim Powell, and Eddie Ruha, while Allen Sarjant had 36, and Rodger Bagshaw 35.

The morning round was notable for the eight twos scored, with Jim Powell and Rhys Peden both having two 2’s. Also Rhys and Mark Mora scored twos on the par 4 seventeenth hole.

AFTERNOON MEN:

This week it was Charlie Gurr that took the honours for the Stableford haggle from Michael Judd (Hutt Park) with both having 38 points.

Next was Alex Teesdale with 36, while David Lockton, Phillip Logan, and Bryce Bevin all had 35.

Paul Williams and Dave Morris both had 34, with Terry Gerbich 33. Garry Towler and Ronny Arthur both scored twos.
