State Highway 2 is now open with a reduced speed limit at Waiotahe Beach.

NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) thanks road users for their patience. Some slip material is still being removed and the slip face will be monitored overnight.

Contractors for NZTA are continuing efforts today to clear a slip on SH2 at Waiotahe Beach, which had closed the highway between Waiotahi Valley Back Road and Paerata Ridge Road since yesterday morning.

The bench at the foot of the slip was cleared last night and overnight rain hasn’t brought down more material.

Work to remove remaining debris is underway today with two radio-connected spotters observing the slip face for safety.

Geotechnical engineers are undertaking an assessment of the cliff face. The road could not be reopened until it was deemed safe to do so.

The detour for east bound traffic: Right onto Waiotahi Valley Back Road, Verrall Road, Left Paerata Ridge Road before rejoining SH2. West bound traffic in reverse.

NZTA will provide another update later today.

Plan ahead for a safe, enjoyable journey.
