Whakamarama is buzzing with excitement as the community comes together at the vibrant markets hosted by the Whakamarama Community Centre.

With a focus on fostering local connections, the centre proudly hosts two popular events: the Kids Market, held on the first Saturday of the school holidays, and a second-hand market that takes place twice a year in April and November.

Launched in 2023, the Whakamarama Kids Market was created to help families navigate the financial pressures of the school holidays.

Organiser Debbie Allan recognised a unique opportunity for children to earn pocket money while developing valuable entrepreneurial and maths skills.

“It’s all about creating a safe space for kids to learn and grow,” said Allan. “They gain confidence by managing their own stalls and practicing maths in a real-world setting.”

The markets have quickly become a cherished community event, with locals enthusiastically supporting one another.

“It’s heartwarming to see families come together, make new friends and cheer on local stallholders,” Allan said.

As the markets grow, the quality of goods on offer continues to impress, with many young entrepreneurs returning as regular stallholders, each time enhancing their offerings and learning along the way.

Having fun is all part of the process, said Allan.

The Whakamarama Community Centre has served as a cornerstone for the community since its establishment by locals in the mid-1970s.

It has hosted countless dances and social gatherings, including the beloved monthly Friday event known as TWIF (Thank Whakamarama It’s Friday).

However, like many community halls in the Western Bay of Plenty, it relies on volunteers to thrive. Allan, who has dedicated the last decade to the hall, stresses the importance of local involvement. “If we don’t step up, we risk losing these vital community spaces,” she said, noting the potential for the hall to close or fall under general council management without sufficient support.

For those eager to experience the charm of the Whakamarama Kids Market, the next event is scheduled for this Saturday, September 28, 3pm-5pm.

Don’t miss the chance to support young entrepreneurs and enjoy a day filled with community spirit. For more updates, follow the Whakamarama Community Centre on Facebook or visit their booking site at spacetoco.com.
