School holidays have begun, but police are urging caution and calm on the roads around the Bay of Plenty.
“The district experiences an increase in people travelling during school holidays – and police want to see everyone get to their destination safely,” Bay of Plenty Road Policing Manager Inspector Logan Marsh said.
The school holidays are set to run from September 27 to October 14, and Marsh said planning will make driving safer during this period.
“You can use NZTA Journey Planner to plan your trip and check where roadworks are planned. And always allow extra time for unforeseen delays.”
It is essential to follow all the road safety basics, ensure everyone wears seatbelts, and take breaks if impaired or fatigued.
Allow extra time when heading to and from a location and keep within a speed limit suitable for the driving conditions.
“Speed continues to be the single biggest factor in whether the driver and their passengers walk away or are carried away from a crash – whether they’re at fault or not.”
Police will do everything they can to ensure drivers are safe on the road, said Marsh.
“Anyone who risks the safety of themselves or others can expect police will follow through with the appropriate enforcement action.”
