On Tuesday October 29 the second annual Tauranga Firefighters Inter Station Relations event will bring together more than 50 firefighters, Hato Hone St John crew, their friends and families to take on a marathon challenge to raise funds for Te Kiwi Māia.
Participants will complete a 42km marathon course between Greerton, Tauranga and Mount Maunganui Fire stations by any means possible.
Some will run, some will bike, others may skate, cry or crawl – but all are committed to finishing.
To add to the camaraderie, firefighters and supporters from Hamilton, Kawerau, Rotorua, Gisborne, and Taupō are joining in for a memorable day.
Organiser Brendon Dunn explains that Inter Station Relations, a day to test limits, show resilience and support the work of Te Kiwi Māia, was sparked by a 15-minute conversation last year with crew members Ash Longhurst, Derryn Davidson and Andrew Woodward.
“We were looking for a way to stay fit, strengthen bonds between stations and watches and raise crucial funds, and we came up with this crazy idea!”

“After the success of the 2023 event we wanted to make 2024 bigger and bolder, and we are even more determined to make a difference,” says Brendon.
“This year’s event will continue to strengthen bonds between Tauranga’s firefighters while supporting a cause that’s incredibly close to our hearts.”
The event isn’t just about friendly competition between stations, it raises funds for Te Kiwi Māia and brings wider attention to the critical work they do.
Te Kiwi Māia provide rehabilitation, recovery and respite for first responders and NZDF personnel who have physical or psychological injuries as a result of their role in safeguarding and caring for New Zealanders.
The participants are encouraging their friends, family, and members of the public to donate what they can via the Givealittle page, come along to cheer them on or join in them to celebrate after the event.
All funds raised will go directly to Te Kiwi Māia, helping continue the invaluable work they do for our first responders and defence force whānau.
