A Brookfield barber and coffee shop is asking for community support after a car drove through the front window of their business this morning.

Barbarista Coffee Co manager Debra McLean said an elderly woman failed to use her brakes and accelerated through the front of the building.

“It’s pretty messy,” she said. “Everybody’s shaken. We’re going to need all the support we can get after this to get back up and running.”

A Fire and Emergency spokesperson said they arrived at the scene at 10.07am after receiving reports of a car versus building accident. They said no one was trapped inside the vehicle when they arrived.

A Hato Hone St Johns spokesperson said one ambulance and one operations manager responded.

“One patient in a minor condition was assessed and treated at the scene, no transport was required.”

Police said they received a report shortly after 10am that a car had left the road and collided with a building on Bellevue Road, Brookfield.

“The sole occupant of the vehicle was shaken but not injured, a tow has been arranged for the vehicle.”

McLean was grateful no one was hurt, and she hoped the shop would be up and running as soon as possible.

“The front of the building will be boarded off, but people will be able to access the coffee shop through the barbershop once we get it safe.”

Not sure why one thinks this poor lady reversed, clearly she was going forward and went straight through shop window. Glad she is ok, very scary for her and the shop workers and customers.

This doesn't happen anywhere near as often with manual trans.
And, over 70's driver testing used to weed out the incompetent drivers.

@Duegatti. The article doesn't mention her age, just "elderly". In today's media, that could be anything over 55.
As for the tests weeding out the over 70s, the first test is at 75 years of age & then 5 years later. As with any age, it is possible to pass a test & become incompetent later. It is also possible that there are as many unlicensed over 75 year old drivers as there are under that age. There are certainly many incompetent ones of all ages.

Insurance companies take care of this. Asking for financial support is not right.
