America faces deep divide as 2024 election nears

Todd Muller, a US political junkie, former leader of the National Party, and MP for Bay of Plenty, has never seen America as divided as it is now.

On November 5, the United States of America will elect Kamala Harris or Donald Trump as President.

Muller attended the Republican National Convention in Cleveland, Ohio, in 2016 when Trump was first nominated.

Trump had not yet wholly overrun the Republican Party as it had eight years later, Muller said.

“It was still very much the country club Republicans,” he said

“Like the Rotarians with a blue blazer, white shirt, beige pants.”

The Republican Party has now been entirely consumed with Make America Great Again (MAGA) and started to change the political landscape of the United States.

So much has changed that George W Bush’s former Vice President Dick Cheney can no longer support Trump due to his disregard for America’s institutions and traditions.

“There are many high-profile Republicans who are doing that, including many who worked for Donald Trump,” Muller said.

Trump has done an excellent job of tapping into the traditional blue-collar base of the Democratic party, stoking fears around immigration and the economy, Muller said.

“Trump has a remarkable ability to talk to the fears of America.”

The change in US politics is not the first time America has seen such a political swing where Ronald Regan captured many Democrats during his campaign.

“That did not last long though.”

America is a country of 350,000,000 people, and from the outside, it can be very easy to see the United States through the lens of social media, Muller said.

“There is great anxiety across the country.”

Trump’s stoking of fear around immigrants and threats to round them up is unacceptable. However, Muller believes that comparing him to Hitler only worsens the toxic political atmosphere in the US.

In New Zealand, there are roughly 1991 members of Democrats Abroad who are likely to vote, said Democrats Abroad Chair James A Winston III.

“This does not account for any other registered voters who may be Republicans, Independents, or Libertarians,” he said.

On November 5, voters will go to the polls in 50 states and five voting territories.

Each has its election bylaws and standards for counting the ballots.

“In Michigan, they have begun counting and processing absentee ballots while others  such as Texas do not begin counting early and absentee ballots until after polls close in the state,” Winston said

Overseas votes can vary, and some have to mail their ballots home via an online portal or fax.

When Donald Trump faced Hillary Clinton in 2016, Winston said there was an immediate change in policy and the US’s global standing.

From 2016 to 2020, Americans experienced Trump’s leadership firsthand, and allies and adversaries gained insights on engaging with his administration.

“In October of 2020, Trump told the Domestic Terrorist group the Proud Boys to ‘Stand Back and Stand By,’” he said.

“In the current election cycle, he has threatened to prosecute the enemy within and has included mainstream politicians who oppose him and the press who report his actions and words.”

Voting is just as important overseas as it is on American soil. Many people living overseas still have friends, family, and financial interests in the country, many of which will be impacted by the outcome of this election.

It is not just the presidency that is up for reelection; Americans will have 20-40 races to vote in.

“A third of the US senators are up for election every 2 years, as are all congressional representatives,” Winston said.

“Many states will have elections for governor this round along with other state elected positions, and even counties and cities may have elections coinciding with the presidential election.”

Winston said that the presidency was chosen by winning the Electoral College.

The Electoral College is the system used to elect the president and vice president of the United States.

It comprises 538 electors—435 from the House of Representatives, three delegates, and 100 Senators—and a candidate needs 270 electoral votes to win.

Political parties select electors, and each state legislature appoints them. Most states and Washington DC use a “winner-takes-all” system, awarding all electoral votes to the candidate who wins the majority of the popular vote in that state.

Established as a compromise at the US Constitutional Convention, the Electoral College has faced over 700 reform proposals in the past 200 years, including moving to a national popular vote system, but none have been successful.

Blah blah blah....
It's the oldest trick in the book.

Our monetary system is collapsing so the banking 'Elites' have no other choice than to destroy our society to then offer the 'start again BS'

Todd on Trump

Posted on 02-11-2024 09:17 | By Pundit

Firstly Todd, Trump talking facts about the current economy in America, isn't stoking fears, it's giving people a choice on the direction of the country. Exactly what you did to get into power.
Also, you talk about Trump stoking fear around immigrants makes it sound like he talking about all immigrants. There have been 11 million immigrants illegally entering America since 2019. Surely this is something to worry about for a country. The equivalent would be 150,000 people illegally landing on the shores of NZ. The deportations he has clearly stated are for the criminal element that have entered. Have you still got the guilts about owning a MEGA cap, Todd?
The poles say it is a very close election which means half the country are behind Trump. Do you not think the fears of half the country are valid? Maybe turn off CNN and do some research.

Fact Check & Half Truths.

@ Pundit. This is how Trump garnered his followers. Through emotional rhetoric, half truths and straight out lies. His speeches have been fact checked and found wanting.
Even you have given as gospel a half truth.
The total number of illegal immigrants that are in the USA peaked at 11million in
2019. That's a total of the population that currently resides there, NOT the amount that have entered since 2019. Trump relys on citizens being too lazy to do due diligence & research. This is how conspiracy theories thrive!

There are some people (I'm one...) who believe in Democracy and DON"T see anyone with an opposing view as "the enemy within". There is also the question of the character of a leader. Trump made it abundantly clear that he has no respect for women, is self-serving, with no concept of public service, and cares about nothing except himself and his cronies. He is a narcissistic egomaniac, who requires adulation and spotlight 24/7 and threatens to close and delicense media channels who don't give it to him. It amuses me that he calls Kamala "low IQ' as if HE is qualified to even judge that. If you leave aside completely the policies of both sides, Trump still loses, because he is a completely unsuitable candidate, based on his "character" (actually, lack of it...). We know that politicians sometimes lie and vacillate; Trump never stops.

Exactly. I just can't believe how many people can't see it. He is dangerous. God help us if gets in.

Easy Decision

I really can't stand Trumps personality but look where we got voting on personality here in NZ with the disastrous government we had. Put the personality and past rubbish aside (with zero convictions for Trump) and look at who will do a better job for their country and further afield. It's a no brainer for me as Kamala is certainly not fit for the job of being president of the USA, not even close.

Due Diligence

Posted on 02-11-2024 21:04 | By Pundit

@Justin T. Ok so quick fact a check. I got the 11million figure from the US Customs and Border Protection official website. On the front page click Stats and Summaries then Nationwide Encounters, scroll down to the bottom and see the total. Actual figure 10,825,387. So, Trump is right. Not sure where you get your facts from but perhaps you need take your own advice about due diligence and research. I am not saying Trump does not say some crazy things, but this isn't one of them.

Opposing View

@morepork. You have used an awful lot of adjectives to describe Trump. If what you say is true, then why do you think half the country loves him? If he is as bad as you think he is why is he so popular? I think sometimes you have to step away from CNN, the New York Times and the Guardian and read some stories from the working-class Trump Voters. He does say some ridiculous things and is definitely egotistical. However, what he does is fight for his country and listens to middle America.

Researched @ Pundit

Ah.... I see you are referring to those that actually got CAUGHT, during the Biden administration. Impressive number yes. That by the way is at all boarders; north, south, airports, sea ports, etc. Seems like the Democrats administration did an excellent job.
So your point was????

The English Language provides over 200,000 words, each with particular shades of meaning. Many of those are adjectives, and I choose mine very caefully. I believe my description was fair and it is not dependent on who agrees or disagrees with it; it is simply my opinion. I could offer a number of reasons why someone who I think is completely unsuitable, is actually loved by many people who are NOT me. The fact that he has supporters, is not debatable, but it doesn't provide a valid reason why I should support him. Many people love sugary foods; I avoid sugar in my diet. Should I change because there are many sugar lovers? As for stepping away from mass media that is NOT Fox News, you don't know me... My whole life has been around information and the processing of it. Careful research is second nature to me.

Agreed!
Hiltler also had a massive following when he first attempted to Make Germany Great Again. So you can see why trump is looking for the same loyalty in his party.
And as for fixing the Ukraine war in a day.... ha! We all know it will take a lot longer to negotiate the handover of the country to his mate putin.

@Morepork. The English language is beautiful when used in the right hands. Your certainly eloquent. I was wondering
If you hated Trump more than vaping.. :) Ok so your choosing personality over the policies. That is an easy thing to do when you don't have to live with the policies of the democrats. Being of perfect character would eliminate most people from running for President. I truly believe if everything you say about him was true he would not be neck and neck in the poles. To believe half of the voters in the USA would vote for the man you described is a bit demeaning I feel. Your analogy of the sugar would mean the trump voters truly believe the country will be better under trump. I tend to agree with them.

@Pundit - quick response to latest

I don't hate Trump; I don't know the man and I can't think of anyone who I actually DO hate. I do not see him as the preferred candidate, for the reasons I described, that's all. I am not choosing personality over policies (I can't find any actual viable Trump policies that would not be detrimental, or would not just favour a certain sector of the society); but I do believe that strength of character is a desirable attribute for the most powerful office in the World, and, as far as I am concerned, Donald J. Trump has not shown the necessary attributes of respect, service, and grown-up behaviour. I respect your right to your opinion, of course. Please do me the same courtesy. We can agree to differ on this.
