Feedback sought on alcohol-free area in the Mount

Tauranga City Council is seeking community feedback on a proposed amendment to its Alcohol Control Bylaw which would formalise the temporary summer-period alcohol-free area along the coastal strip in Mount Maunganui.

"Over the past six summers, we’ve implemented this temporary alcohol-free area along Marine Parade from its intersection with Grove Avenue, Oceanbeach Road and Maranui Street, from October 21 to April 6, 9pm to 7am," said a council spokesperson in a statement.

This area sits between two existing year-round, alcohol-free areas already in the bylaw, said council.

The temporary alcohol-free area was first introduced in December 2018 in response to community concerns and evidence from Police about alcohol-related harm in the area.

"Since it was introduced, Police have found it to be an effective means of managing disorder and reducing risks associated with alcohol.

"We now want to formalise this temporary alcohol-free area by including it in our Alcohol Control Bylaw.

"This bylaw sets alcohol-free areas across our city to help reduce potential alcohol-related harm including levels of intoxication, noise, disorder, and crime."

Council said the proposed amendment will help ensure a consistent approach is taken across the coastal strip and will be more efficient than continuing to implement a temporary ban each year.

"We want to hear your thoughts on including this area in the bylaw. You can do this by sharing your feedback online, emailing policy@tauranga.govt.nz or completing a printed consultation form available at our Library Community Hubs across the city."

Consultation is now open and closes at 5pm on Friday, 6 December.

Not MORE RULES!!!! Our lives are soooooo controlled. Why not do the proper thing and simply remove all alcohol from anyone misbehaving. Confiscate their alcohol and serve them a trepass notice to never bring alcohol to the area again.

We don’t need more rules. Knee jerk reactions to a situation does not require permanent rules.
This is an amazing place let’s enjoy it as do 99% of people.

I drink on the beach

I've drunk beers on the beach - I do no harm to anyone.
Let's use common sense, if people get out of hand arrest them lol

Stop

I agree with the above comments. Don't go putting in more rules because a few dingbats play up and the majority of us can have a few drinks at the beach.

Needed

100% needed. Totally out of control especially Christmas: NY and while you're at it sort out the non consented holiday rentals and all the drinking and parties they have.
Time to regulate holiday income as business and pay commercial rates.

Hmmm

I can still recall my sister receiving a significant cut to her foot that required stitches and tetanus injections, from a broken bottle under the sand on a beach.
Maybe for some of our commenters, we should instead mandate everyone wears protective clothing when going to the beach.
They might well be perfectly behaved individuals, but I guarantee that they know others that aren't as community minded after abusing alcohol for a few hours.
Let's put public safety and respect for others above the need to mix alcohol with a family environment.
